US Senate honors ‘The King’ Arnold Palmer

<p>WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; Dust off the ice skates and find those woolen mittens and maybe a hat. The only chance to skate on the same ice as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins is on Tuesday.</p><p>Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza hosts its annual open skate night and, for one night a year, is opening up its ice to the public. On Dec. 6, the 13th annual Toys for Tots Open Skate night will welcome skaters and visitors of all ages. The event is designed to raise money and collect toys in support of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. The same night, the arena will host a holiday-themed open house featuring self-guided tours of the venue.</p><p>Steve Poremba, the arena&#8217;s marketing director, said in a news release that at each of the stops of the open house visitors are in for a few surprises. Those wishing to participate in the open skate are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy or make a monetary donation of at least $5. The open house is free for all attendees.</p><p>The open skate and house runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Skaters must bring their own ice skates. Rentals are available at the Toyota SportsPlex (Community Ice Rink) at Coal St. Rentals are $3 a pair and will be available beginning at 4 p.m. Dec. 5. Quantities of skates are limited, so people are encouraged to rent early. A valid driver&#8217;s license and credit card are required to reserve a pair and skates must be returned to the sportsplex within 24 hours of the open skate event.</p><p>During the event, free snacks and gifts will be available to guests courtesy of Utz Snack Foods and NBT Bank while supplies lasts. Other prizes will be given away throughout the night including a luxury suite to a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey game, tickets for Disney on Ice, Monster Jam, The Harlem Globetrotters and Ringling Bros. and Barnum &amp; Bailey Circus.</p><p>No holiday event would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus.
