CARLISLE &#8211; Shickshinny resident Kirsten Walsh, a senior at Dickinson College, has been selected as a Baird Sustainability Fellow for advancing sustainability goals on or beyond the Dickinson campus through excellence in scholarship, leadership and service.Walsh is one of 11 students selected for the prestigious program. Criteria for selection include high academic achievement, attainment of advanced-level sustainability competencies and dispositions through academic work and practice, and evidence of a service project of exceptional impact related to sustainability.Established in 2012, the Baird Fellowship Program is named in honor of Spencer Fullerton Baird, a Dickinson alumnus, class of 1840, who became the first curator of the Smithsonian National Museum and is regarded as one of the nation&#8217;s leading naturalists of the 19th century.Walsh is an environmental science major with a passion for international stewardship. Through Dickinson, Walsh has traveled to Rwanda to teach English to Rwandan military officers and to Denmark to study Arctic glaciology and renewable energy systems. During her semester abroad in Copenhagen, Walsh worked as a blogger for the Danish Institute of Study Abroad&#8217;s Environmental Science of the Arctic Department.Walsh is a cadet in Dickinson&#8217;s Army ROTC program. She also works as a campus tour guide and a first-year student mentor.She is a graduate of Northwest Area High School. She is the daughter of Joseph and Stefanie Walsh.
