Dallas School District students, teachers head back to class

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A man who police say fled their custody after he was placed under arrest for allegedly trying to strangle a 6-month-old infant, and attacked a woman when she intervened, was apprehended on Monday.</p><p>Derek Reich, 28, of Wilkes-Barre, is alleged to have broken free from police on Dec. 5 when an officer was placing him into a patrol vehicle, and fled on foot.</p><p>The Wilkes-Barre police Detective Division, Anti Crime Unit and NIST Unit initiated &#8220;an extensive investigation&#8221; and, on Monday, investigators received information that Reich was at 66 N. Fulton St. in the city.</p><p>Surveillance was set up in the area by the Detective and Patrol divisions, and a warrant was prepared for the address and executed without incident.</p><p>Police descended on the Fulton Street home late Monday afternoon. When police entered the house, Reich attempted to flee from a second floor window, but was stopped and taken into custody without further incident, police said.</p><p>Reich is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and recklessly endangering another person in connection with the alleged incident involving the child. He is also charged with providing false identification to law enforcement and escape in connection with the second incident.</p><p>A former Fulton Street resident who asked not to be identified and who was visiting the a current resident identified the area as a &#8220;bad neighborhood.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;A lot of bad things happen on this street,&#8221; she said.</p><p>Reich was arraigned before District Judge David Barilla, who set bail at $150,000, according to court records.</p><p>He remains at Luzerne County Correctional Facility for failure to post bail.</p><p>A preliminary hearing is scheduled before District Judge Rick Cronauer for 10 a.m. Dec. 27.</p><style>
