Joseph Rogan: Charter schools not performing as planned in Pennsylvania; should we scrap them?

The upcoming primary is of significant importance to Wilkes-Barre&#8217;s registered Democrats.There are four candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor. Just looking at the census data, the majority population in Wilkes-Barre makes up approximately 75 percent, while the racial minority population makes up approximately 25 percent. Whenever there&#8217;s a close divide among the majority population, the minority vote looms even larger and more significant.Most African-Americans tend to vote along Democratic lines. Just look at recent statistics.The winner of the Democratic primary is most likely to become the next mayor of the city of Wilkes-Barre, because the voting electorate is skewed toward Democrats. Democrats would either have to cross over or not show up during the general election in order for a Republican to win.As Democrats, we should vote for the person who we feel can do the best job in the capacity of mayor. We should not vote based on popularity, ethnicity or gender.Make your vote count by registering to vote, educating yourself to the issues and casting your ballot. If you haven&#8217;t seen the movie &#8220;Selma,&#8221; then you need to go right now and see it. People were willing to die, and did die, for what so many of us take for granted. The people who died were black, white, and most of all they were Americans.If your vote did not count, they would not be working so hard to suppress it. That just goes to show the importance of your vote.Regardless of your wealth, every American citizen gets one vote. Your vote is so valuable that some people might even attempt to purchase it. However, selling your vote is selling your voice.I estimate that in the 2016 election for U.S. president the two major political parties will spend in excess of $3 billion campaigning for your vote. Whether you&#8217;re on the winning side of an issue or the losing side, at least allow your voice to be counted.Ronald L. FeltonWilkes-Barre
