NBA: Joel Embiid leads Philadelphia 76ers to 3rd straight win

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8211; It seems like whenever Meyers and Hanover Area meet on the wrestling mat, the rivalry gets kicked up a notch with a little bit of drama.</p><p>Last year during the regular season, at Hanover Area, a scoreboard power outage occurred in Meyers&#8217; win. Then in their meeting in the District 2 Class 2A semifinals, the outcome was decided in the last match in the Hawkeyes&#8217; victory.</p><p>Friday night at Meyers was no different.</p><p>Not only did the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 showdown come down to the last bout, a little controversy was added in a wild 39-38 Meyers victory.</p><p>Hanover Area held a two-point lead heading into the final bout, at 113, where the Hawkeyes&#8217; Josselin Meyer faced Caden Strobel. With the score tied 2-2 late and heading for overtime with less than 15 seconds remaining, Meyer was called for a stall &#8212; resulting in a point for Strobel, who then held on for a 3-2 win which lifted the Mohawks to victory.</p><p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t want to win a match on a stall call, but it did work out in our favor that match; and a win is a win,&#8221; Meyers coach Anthony Mercadante said.</p><p>Hanover Area coach Rich Gavlick said the call made the loss harder to take.</p><p>&#8220;It is what it is. I didn&#8217;t think it was a stall. But it&#8217;s the ref&#8217;s judgment call,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a tough loss. Right now, I don&#8217;t think anyone on our team is feeling good. But I told our guys to remain positive, and this gives us something to work harder for.&#8221;</p><p>Meyers (2-0 Division 2) has started its divisional dual season with consecutive close wins, having beaten Berwick by two points on Thursday night.</p><p>Friday&#8217;s dual consisted of six lead changes, all coming after the sixth bout of the night. The Mohawks jumped out to an 18-0 lead on pins from Anthony Kasper (120 pounds) and Kevin Huertero (126), followed by a forfeit. Four straight victories from the Hawkeyes (1-1 Division 2) gave them their first lead at 20-18. The run consisted of falls by Jeff Bennett (138) and Zakee Nettles (152). D.J. Erickson picked up a technical fall at 145, while Noah Rakowski (160) was one point shy of a major decision, beating Jeremy Bergold 9-2 and giving the Hawkeyes another bonus point. Rakowski actually had Bergold on his back in the third period, but couldn&#8217;t wrap up the pin.</p><p>&#8220;Noah caught him. We&#8217;re lucky (Bergold) didn&#8217;t give up six there,&#8221; Mercadante added. &#8220;All the credit to Bergold for fighting because if we give up six there, you&#8217;re not sitting here talking to me.</p><p>&#8220;As big as Bergold fighting off his back was, 145 was big too. If Susu Burroughs gets pinned (at 145), we&#8217;re going to criteria, and I don&#8217;t know who wins because I don&#8217;t know that mumble jumble. That&#8217;s how much not giving up six means.&#8221;</p><p>The next five bouts all ended via fall with Meyers&#8217; Colin Browne (170), Namir Murphy (195) and Lucas Borum (220), and the Hawkeyes&#8217; J.J. Hooper (182) and Nick Hannon (285) as Meyers led 36-32 with two weights left. A Meyers forfeit put Hanover Area in front, 38-36, entering the final match.</p><p>The teams could meet again at the District 2 Class 2A Duals, just like last year. Both squads also have to face fellow division contender Lake-Lehman over the next two weeks, setting up what could be another wild finish.</p><p>&#8220;Anything can happen for the team season, and anything can still happen for the division,&#8221; Gavlick said.</p><p>Mercadante coached Hanover Area the previous five years before moving to his alma mater this year, but Gavlick said there wasn&#8217;t any extra incentive for his team to beat their old coach.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always a rivalry match. When Meyers and Hanover are good teams, it&#8217;s always a battle. I don&#8217;t think that was anything extra,&#8221; Gavlick added. &#8220;Our guys wanted to win and their guys wanted to win. There&#8217;s all kind of things that go into a match, but the driving factor is bragging rights.
