<p>As anyone who has undergone a surgical procedure can attest, the experience is frequently accompanied by anxiety and fear of the unknown.</p><p>Often a patient&#8217;s concern involves pain associated with the surgery, either during the procedure itself or during the postoperative period. Thankfully, there are professionals who specifically address these concerns.</p><p>A nurse is trained to care for the sick, especially in a hospital. These professionals dedicate their lives to working alongside physicians and other members of the health care team to provide the needed services to expedite recovery and provide comfort to the ill individual.</p><p>For the patient undergoing surgery, alleviation of pain is a must. Fortunately, medications to control pain, including general and local anesthetics, are readily available. To ensure safety, patients who undergo procedures involving the use of these medications require continuous physiologic monitoring, including heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure, inspired and expired gases and oxygen, and temperature.</p><p>Enter the nurse anesthetist. These specialized health care providers combine both roles to help you through the journey. Often having spent at least a year caring for critically ill patients in the ICU setting, these highly trained providers continue their education to achieve a master&#8217;s degree in nursing along with two years of training specific to the administration of anesthesia.
