YATESVILLE &#8212; Hazleton Area has been one of the top teams in District 2 over the last four years.But the Cougars were always one individual win or team victory away from separating themselves from the rest of the Class 3A teams.On Saturday at Pittston Area High School, Hazleton Area finally came out as the best team in the district.The Cougars rallied from an early 14-point deficit and overcame giving up two forfeits to defeat Delaware Valley 36-28 in the finals of the District 2 Class 3A Duals Tournament.&#8220;Coming out here, we made a statement today,&#8221; Cougars senior Jimmy Hoffman said. &#8220;We needed bonus points because we were giving up 12 points right off the bat with forfeits.&#8221;With the win, Hazleton Area now has the most dual titles in D2 history with six breaking a tie with Meyers and Lake-Lehman, which have five in Class 2A . It&#8217;s the Cougars&#8217; first duals crown since 2010.Hazleton Area advances to the PIAA Team Championships in Hershey on Thursday at the Giant Center and will face District 3 runner-up Cedar Cliff at 6 p.m. in the first round. Cedar Cliff fell to Exeter Township, 32-27 in the championship dual.&#8220;It&#8217;s what we&#8217;ve worked for as little kids,&#8221; said 160-pounder Jeremy Aquino, who had a huge win in the second-to-last match of the dual. &#8220;We&#8217;ve always been told we have potential to be district champions and now that we have an opportunity to go to Hershey as a team, I&#8217;m really grateful and really happy for us.&#8221;On Saturday afternoon, the Cougars won the last four matches of the meet to complete the comeback, but it wasn&#8217;t easy.With the score tied at 28-28 in the 13th bout, Aquino won a toss-up match against Hayden Thompson 3-1. Aquino was awarded a takedown near the end of the mat as the first period came to a close. He later got an escape in the third period for a 3-0 edge.&#8220;Seeing him get that takedown in the first period, sparks flew, we knew he was doing good,&#8221; Hoffman said.On his feet for most of the third period and battling a minor illness, Aquino tried to do his best to avoid getting taken down to hold on for the win. When the buzzer finally sounded, the Cougars bench erupted as they took a 31-28 lead with just one weight left.Sophomore Shane Noonan closed out the championship match winning with a tech fall over Shane Fagan.&#8220;I just focused on my match and I did all I could to get a win for the team to get us the district title,&#8221; Aquino said. &#8220;I was counting it down and once it hit the 15 second mark, I was gonna do my best to not get taken down or give up the points and I did what I could.&#8221;The Warriors went ahead 18-4 after the first four weights in the dual which started at 182 pounds. Luckily for Hazleton Area, the hardest part of its lineup was still to come.Once the turn to 106 came, the squad started to get going. Jake Maurer won by major decision, freshman Charles Everdale followed with a pin at 113. A decision by Stephen Martisofski at 120 in another toss-up match, cut the DelVal lead to 18-17. Then a decision from Anthony Martoccio at 126 gave the Cougars their first lead at 20-18.But Hazleton Area had to forfeit 132 before the Warriors&#8217; Mike McKinney won by major decision at 138 as they took control with a 28-20 lead.&#8220;Coming here today I thought we had an uphill battle but these kids proved me wrong again,&#8221; Hazleton Area coach Keith Maurer said.Hoffman, the Cougars&#8217; standout, racked up 17 points for a tech fall at 145 pulling the Cougars within 28-25. Jake Marnell tied up the dual at 28-28 with a decision at 152.Earlier on Saturday in Class 3A, Tunkhannock defeated Coughlin in the consolation semis, but fell to West Scranton in the third-place match.In the Class 2A final, Honesdale defeated Western Wayne 34-26 to claim its first-ever duals title. It was the Hornets&#8217; first appearance in the 2A final and just their second overall.Meyers topped Lake-Lehman in the 2A consolation semifinals, while Hanover Area was defeated by Valley View in that round.
