Wilkes-Barre’s Masonic Lodge No. 61 honors past master

<p>WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; Harvest Buffet, a self-serve restaurant with Asian and American influences, is set to open Thursday in East End Centre.</p><p>The restaurant will open at the former site of Old Country Buffet, which closed its doors abruptly last March after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.</p><p>Bing Guo, assistant manager of Harvest Buffet, said the restaurant will set itself apart through its menu, which was developed by executive chef Michael Gruner.</p><p>Guo said the eatery will offer traditional Chinese menu items, as well as Japanese fare like hibachi and sushi and American cuisine such as chicken marsala and mussels in white wine sauce.</p><p>The restaurant will also have a &#8220;cold bar&#8221; featuring shrimp, oysters and clams, said Gruner, an 18-year veteran of the food industry. He most recently worked at the Olde Brook Inn in Springbrook Township.</p><p>&#8220;We have more flavors other than what you&#8217;d find at a traditional buffet,&#8221; he said.</p><p>Gruner said he oversees a team that includes chefs who specialize in Chinese and Japanese cuisines, giving the restaurant a unique collaboration in menu development.</p><p>Guo added that the name, Harvest Buffet, stems from the idea of changing the menu seasonally and keeping ingredients as fresh as possible.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to keep frozen items to a bare minimum,&#8221; said Gruner.</p><p>The restaurant will be a completely self-serve buffet, with guests paying before they eat. Guo said this will give customers with limited time the ability to have more control over their experience.</p><p>He said the dining area can seat over 300 people.</p><p>Guo also said the restaurant places a focus on keeping things local, from the menu to its staff. The buffet will employ between 40 and 45 people, with a few positions still open, he said.</p><p>Guo said it took between six and seven months to remodel the restaurant, which involved installing new floors, buffet stations, fixtures, touch-ups to the exterior and more.</p><p>The buffet will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.</p><style>
