Kirby Center reschedules ‘I Have A Dream’ performance

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A day after a date was set in the sentencing of former Luzerne County prison counselor Louis Elmy, federal prosecutors Wednesday requested a 30-day continuance.</p><p>Elmy, 52, of Nicholson Street, Wilkes-Barre, <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/567624/prosecutors-lou-elmy-traded-guns-to-drug-dealers-to-feed-crack-addiction" target="_blank">pleaded guilty to extortion and a firearms charge in July</a>, but his sentencing date remained unknown until a notice of hearing filed Tuesday in federal court <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/567624/prosecutors-lou-elmy-traded-guns-to-drug-dealers-to-feed-crack-addiction" target="_blank">listed the date for later this month</a>.</p><p>On Wednesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Olshefski filed an unopposed motion asking to continue the Feb. 21 date for a period of 30 days due to another trial she is scheduled to begin Feb. 22. A judge had not immediately ruled on the motion Wednesday.</p><p>Elmy, a former Wilkes-Barre City Council candidate and Wilkes-Barre Area School Board president, admitted to extorting cash and other items, including crack cocaine, from an inmate while working as a work release counselor at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility from 2013 to 2014. When his addiction grew to costly, he began trading his personal firearms for the drug, prosecutors said.</p><p>Elmy faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to life in prison on the gun charge and up to 20 years behind bars on the extortion charge, prosecutors said.</p><style>
