Wyoming Valley West’s defense comes up big against Crestwood

<p>WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; Oskar Sundqvist kissed the flu bug goodbye during Tuesday&#8217;s 5-1 over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.</p><p>The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins center missed practice on Monday because of the flu, but he felt good enough on Tuesday to score twice as the Penguins (37-11-3-0) dominated the Phantoms at home for the second time. Jean-Sebastien Dea and Dominik Simon each added a goal and an assist, and Tristan Jarry stopped 27 of 28 shots for the win.</p><p>The Penguins have now won three straight and are 2-2 against Lehigh Valley on the season.</p><p>Sundqvist, who battled an injury after the all-star break and was mired in a 16-game drought without a goal, said he wondered how he would feel on Tuesday after suffering through the flu.</p><p>&#8220;You have to fight through it at the beginning (of the game),&#8221; he said. &#8220;Hopefully I&#8217;m going to feel even better tomorrow.&#8221;</p><p>The Penguins&#8217; power play connected on its first chance of the night when Derrick Pouliot sent a shot from the point that made it through traffic in front for a 1-0 lead five minutes into the first period.</p><p>In the final minutes of the period, Simon put the Penguins up 2-0 when he converted a pass from Dea in the slot.</p><p>While on the penalty kill to open the second period, Sundqvist pounced on a loose puck in the neutral zone after it bounced over an opposing players&#8217; stick, and he raced in on a breakaway, beating goaltender Anthony Stolarz with a backhander through the five-hole.</p><p>&#8220;I was coming out there to block a shot and I saw (the puck) bounce over his stick,&#8221; Sundqvist said. &#8220;I had my feet forward and his were in the other direction. I got a little bit lucky there.&#8221;</p><p>Sundqvist&#8217;s shorthanded goal made it 3-0, but Lehigh Valley struck back at the midway point on a wrap-around goal by Nicolas Aube-Kubel.</p><p>With a two-goal lead, Dea extended it late in the period when he sniped a shot from the right faceoff circle that fooled everyone and bounced off the back bar and out for a 4-1 Penguins lead.</p><p>At the other end, Jarry made several big stops and single-handedly bailed the Penguins out on the penalty kill early in the period. With the Phantoms in the Penguins end, Jarry reached out with his skate to stop Chris Conner at the corner, and on the next shift slid across the crease to smother a Colin McDonald shot from the other post.</p><p>&#8220;We watch every team&#8217;s power play before the game starts. (Lehigh Valley) is a shooting power play,&#8221; Jarry said. &#8220;They wanted to give me that shot and I said &#8216;I was OK with it&#8217;. I just wanted to make sure I got over there as quick as I could.&#8221;</p><p>Sundqvist scored his second of the game when he backhanded the puck from the corner and banked in off Stolarz to make it 5-1 early in the third period.</p><p>The Penguins shut down the Phantoms in the final period, limiting them to seven shots to preserve the four-goal lead.</p><p>Head coach Clark Donatelli said it was important to play a full 60 minutes against a powerful team like the Phantoms, and it was also good to see Sundqvist producing like his old self again.</p><p>&#8220;He&#8217;s back to playing the way he can play. It&#8217;s good to see him back,&#8221; Donatelli said.</p><p>NOTES</p><p>&#8226; Garrett Wilson left the game in the first period after being hit into the boards by Phantoms defenseman Samuel Morin. Donatelli said Wilson will go for an x-ray on Wednesday and will be out week-to-week with an upper body injury.</p><p>&#8226; D Tim Erixon (veteran scratch), RW Patrick McGrath, D Lukas Bengtsson, D Barry Goers and C Thomas Di Pauli (injury) were scratched for the Penguins.</p><style>
