Hazleton native Joe Maddon, Cubs start with fanfare, big expectations

<p>KINGSTON &#8212; Kat Banks and company were doing things mostly on the cheap: an elevated floor, a rug, a few hundred dollars for some lights and a table.</p><p>Of course, there was that mammoth sofa: $4,775.</p><p>You really want to spend that much on a sofa for students to plop down on between classes?</p><p>&#8220;Oh, <em>yeah</em>!&#8221;Sarah Maseychik purred with a grin.</p><p>Along with fellow ninth-grade students Kelly Williams and Ashley Tarud, Kat and Sarah were designing a space to potentially fill part of an actual lobby in one of the Wyoming Seminary Upper School Buildings. Elevating the floor a few inches would set it off. The big sofa &#8212; stretching like a big rectangle missing one long side &#8212; would invite students to settle for a spell and interact.</p><p>They were one of six teams in teacher Charles Carrick&#8217;s ninth-grade class spending about six weeks with employees from local architect firms learning to design layouts for real campus locations. They used Google SketchUp, a 3-D modeling program that lets a person quickly create and drop objects into the image of a room or building.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s like a digital doll house,&#8221; explained Collyn Hinchey, an interior designer from the architect and design firm Bholin Cywinski Jackson</p><p>Kat and her teammates had sketched a bare-bones image of their space on the computer. Other teams had far more sophisticated renditions &#8212; one included a ping-pong table, a chair looking suspiciously like it belonged in a barber shop, and a sweeping sofa that curled in on itself, like a number 6 that didn&#8217;t quite close the loop. Another included a long, thin table top along one wall with stools, looking like a snack counter.</p><p>The computer program wasn&#8217;t the lesson of the day Wednesday. Carrick had them going considerably more low tech, creating interior design &#8220;design boards,&#8221; rectangles of white foam board in this case, with different bits of a planned material glued to it &#8212; a sample of a proposed rug, say, along with a paint chip, a piece of paneling, and pictures of furniture.</p><p>&#8220;You want to try to make it proportional,&#8221; Hinchey advised, meaning if you proposed twice as much blue-painted wall as wood paneling, the paint color sample would be twice as big as the panel sample.</p><p>The different designs by each team are not pure abstract wishes. As part of the project, the proposals will be presented to administration for consideration. &#8220;Think of it as asking the board of trustees to spend money on your space,&#8221; Carrick said.</p><p>So did all this architect and design work get any of team mammoth sofa thinking about a career in architecture or design?</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s interesting enough,&#8221; Kat said, offering a not-so ringing endorsement.</p><p>&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t not consider it.&#8221;</p><style>
