Bridge tournament attracts hundreds to Plains Township hotel complex

HERSHEY &#8212; During the first half of Saturday&#8217;s game between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Hershey Bears, it was a pretty even affair.But in the second half, the ice tilted toward the offensive zone for Hershey and toward the penalty box for the Penguins.Hershey gained a lead late in the second period while the Penguins were whistled for six straight penalties, running out of time for a comeback in a 2-1 loss. It snapped a six-game win streak against the Bears as the Penguins (38-16-3-0) are now 8-3 against their Atlantic Division rival.Josh Archibald scored the lone goal for the Penguins while Tristan Jarry stopped 25 shots, anchoring a penalty kill that went 6-for-6.But it was the extensive time on the penalty kill that dictated the game for the Penguins, who only had one power play on the night.&#8220;We had a good first half of the game but we couldn&#8217;t stay out of the box (in the second half),&#8221; Penguins coach Clark Donatelli said. &#8220;You get a feel for how the refs are calling the game, and we just took too many sticking penalties.&#8221;The Penguins didn&#8217;t show any signs of rust from their six-day layoff between games. Archibald put the Penguins up 1-0 midway through the first period when he tipped an Oskar Sundqvist shot over Hershey&#8217;s newly-acquired netminder, Pheonix Copley, who finished the night with 36 saves.The Bears answered minutes later when the Penguins were unable to clear the puck away from the crease and Colby Williams fired it into the net for a 1-1 tie.After spending most of the second period with neither team able to generate many chances, the Bears established pressure late and gained a 2-1 lead. Stanislav Galiev skated around Tim Erixon along the boards and beat Jarry with a wrist shot with less than two minutes remaining.The Penguins got off to a rough start in the third period, taking two penalties in the first five minutes.Jarry kept the Bears off the board with several big saves, including a glove stop on a Galiev shot from the side of the net to kill off the second Hershey power play of the period.The penalty parade continued for the Penguins as they were whistled for two more later in the period, giving Hershey 46 seconds of a two-man advantage.&#8220;It disrupts the flow,&#8221; Donatelli said of the penalties. &#8220;We really dug ourselves in a hole having to kill six power plays.&#8221;Jarry made three more stops during the Hershey five-on-three and the Penguins killed off the rest of the power play time. But with 2:30 left in the game the Penguins ran out of time for a comeback.NOTES&#8226; D Brett Stern, D Stuart Percy, F Patrick McGrath, F Garrett Wilson (injury) and D Lukas Bengtsson (illness) were scratched for the Penguins.&#8226; The Penguins departed right after the game for Hartford, where they will play at 3 p.m. Sunday.&#8226; Defenseman Frank Corrado, who was acquired from Toronto on Wednesday&#8217;s trade deadline, made it in from Canada to participate in Saturday&#8217;s morning skate and play in the game.What did he think of his first taste of the Penguins-Bears rivalry?&#8220;It seems pretty intense,&#8221; Corrado said. &#8220;The crowd was really into it and you could feel the energy on the ice.&#8221;&#8226; Thomas Di Pauli played in his first game since late November, skating on a line with Archibald and Sundqvist. Donatelli liked what he saw from Di Pauli and Corrado in the lineup.&#8220;I thought (Di Pauli) brought a lot of energy,&#8221; Donatelli said. &#8220;Frank was physical, fast and closing in one guys.
