<p>Forget just reaching the NCAA Tournament. Penn State&#8217;s hockey team made its debut in style.</p><p>The Nittany Lions&#8217; first time on the national stage turned into one of the most dominant NCAA wins in decades, a 10-3 demolition of Union College on Saturday at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati.</p><p>What had been a back-and-forth game that was tied in the second period turned into a complete rout. The Lions scored seven unanswered goals, including five in the third period, to bury the 2014 national champions.</p><p>The 10 goals were the most scored in an NCAA Tournament game in 27 years, when Lake Superior State also won a 10-3 game on March 17, 1990. They also set a new Penn State record and tied the mark for most goals scored by a team in its first tournament game.</p><p>Seeded third in the Midwest Regional, Penn State (25-11-2) pulled it off on just 33 shots. Eight different players found the back of the net, led by two apiece from Chase Berger and Nate Sucese.</p><p>&#8220;Maybe a bit surprising that we scored 10, but we just kept shooting and playing Penn State hockey,&#8221; Berger said via the team&#8217;s Twitter account.</p><p>Up next is the Lions&#8217; toughest test yet &#8212; a date with tournament No. 1 overall seed Denver at 6 p.m. Sunday in Cincinnati. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU, with the winner earning a spot in next month&#8217;s Frozen Four in Chicago.</p><p>Denver (30-7-4) also recorded a decisive opening win by beating Michigan Tech 5-2 in the game before Penn State took the ice. The Pioneers have won seven national titles and have reached the Frozen Four 15 times, including last season, when they lost in the semifinals.</p><p>On Saturday, there was no way to predict how Penn State players would respond to their first taste of NCAA Tournament action. In just the program&#8217;s fifth season on the Division I level, the Lions could have been running on fumes after an exhausting run to the Big Ten championship last weekend.</p><p>In a span of three straight nights, Penn State played the equivalent of four games to beat Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, with the latter two going into double overtime.</p><p>As it was, Penn State couldn&#8217;t hold any early leads against second-seeded Union, as the Dutchmen (25-10-3) quickly answered each of the Lions&#8217; first three goals.</p><p>But just before the midway point of the second period, Berger knocked in what proved to be the game-winner as Union&#8217;s net was coming off of its pegs. The goal ultimately stood, and the Lions never looked back.</p><p>Brandon Biro, Kris Myllari, Dylan Richard, Denis Smirnov, Nikita Pavlychev and Andrew Sturtz also added goals in the record performance. Myllari, Berger, Sucese and Sturtz all tied for the team lead with three points apiece.</p><p>Langhorne native Peyton Jones followed up his MVP performance from the Big Ten Tournament by stopping 22 shots.</p><p>Union goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos was chased after giving up his seventh goal six minutes into the third period.</p><style>
