Labor negotiations with Wilkes-Barre union’s focus on extensions

<p>WYOMING &#8212; Kaya Riley&#8217;s desire to help people has never faltered.</p><p>The 24-year-old Larksville resident always wanted to be a psychiatrist, but the amount of schooling required seemed daunting to her.</p><p>With some coaxing from her mother, Maya Noble, Riley found a new career path &#8212; cosmetology.</p><p>Now she is celebrating the opening of her own business, K. Riley Salon, at 301 Wyoming Ave. The celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, and Riley will offer 15 percent off coupons for all services at the salon and a gift certificate raffle.</p><p>It wasn&#8217;t easy trying to decide a new focus in life, but Riley said she had always had a knack for helping others with hair and makeup while she was a student at Tunkhannock Area High School.</p><p>&#8220;I have five siblings and my mother said we all had to do something (career-wise),&#8221; said Riley. &#8220;I used to love doing hair in high school, so my mother kind of talked me into looking into beauty school. &#8230; A lot of my passion to help and listen to people is still there, and I can help make people feel better about themselves.&#8221;</p><p>This is Riley&#8217;s first independent venture since she graduated from Jolie Health and Beauty Academy five years ago. The business will offer haircuts and hair coloring services, manicures, waxing and makeup application. The salon uses the Paul Mitchell product line.</p><p>Riley said she set the pricing to be competitive with other salons. Women&#8217;s haircuts cost $27, coloring starts at $55, waxing is $10, manicures start at $10 and makeup application costs $50.</p><p>She found the location through the previous tenant, another salon owner who moved to a larger facility. Riley said she liked that Wyoming Avenue is &#8220;quiet but still very busy.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;This was on a whim,&#8221; said Riley, who just started working on the business in January. &#8220;The goal is to have three salons in five years.&#8221;</p><p>The salon has three stylists in addition to Riley, and she said that&#8217;s what will make the facility stand out from others in the area.</p><p>&#8220;I like the energy we have,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s fun and welcoming.&#8221;</p><p>Walk-ins will be accepted. Riley said she plans to be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week, but Sundays will be by appointment only.</p><p>&#8220;We definitely want to do what&#8217;s convenient for our clients,&#8221; she said.</p><p>The venture is exciting as Riley juggles the business with student-teaching at Jolie Academy and being a mom to 3-year-old daughter London.</p><style>
