Former Hazleton Area star Sal Biasi struck out nine and did not allow an earned run while earning Penn State&#8217;s first Big Ten victory of the season with a 6-2 win over Ohio State on Saturday at Medlar Field.Biasi (4-3) pitched a season-high 6 2/3 innings for Penn State (11-17, 1-3 Big Ten), striking out nine and yielding one unearned run on three hits and three walks.Taylor Lehman recorded a strikeout to end the seventh, and Nick Distasio pitched the final two innings, striking out two and surrendering a solo home run in the top of the ninth.The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Nittany Lions and a five-game skid dating back to 2014 against the Buckeyes. Ohio State and Penn State did not meet last season.A season-high crowd of 1,614 attended the game.SOFTBALLMonarchs in full BloomJunior Samantha Bloom registered the 100th base hit of her career on a two-run home run in the seventh inning to push across what proved to be the deciding run as King&#8217;s salvaged a doubleheader split with Freedom Conference rival DeSales with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.DeSales won the opener 7-6.With King&#8217;s clinging to a 3-2 lead in the top-of-the seventh inning. Amber Saylor reached base on a fielder&#8217;s choice before the left-handed hitting Bloom cracked a home-run over the right-field fence. The hit proved to be important as DeSales countered with two runs in the bottom-of-the seventh thanks to three King&#8217;s errors to set the final score.Bloom went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the second game, while Rachael DeTore was 2-for-3 with three RBI to pace the Lady Monarchs&#8217; offensively.Bloom was also the winning pitcher, tossing a complete-game five-hitter, allowing no earned runs.Megan Beaupre went 3 for 4 for King&#8217;s in the opener, and Rachael DeTore was 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Alizabeth Ellsworth also had two hits for the Monarchs.Misericordia edges Wilkes twiceThe Cougars scored their lone run in the first game on three hits and an error to post 1-0 victory, then scored in the top of the seventh inning to sweep the Colonels with a 2-1 win.Former Hazleton Area standout Celine Podlesney was the hard-luck loser for King&#8217;s in the opener, as the Monarchs were held to two hits.Sarah Birchmeier singled home the day&#8217;s lone for for the Monarchs, giving the team a 1-0 lead in the third inning before Misericordia scored runs in the fourth and seventh innings of the nightcap.MEN&#8217;S TENNISKing&#8217;s 7, Eastern 2Tyler Millan improved to 17-1 on the season by sweeping the No. 2 singles match, 6-2, 6-0 and the Monarchs remained unbeaten in MAC Freedom Conference play.King&#8217;s, which improved to 3-0 in league play and 6-5 overall, took a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition as Josh Mesaris and Luke Whitenight were 8-1 winners in the second flight and Terry Briggs and Ryan Kopishke won the third flight pairing, 8-1.The Monarchs then sewed up the match by winning five of the six singles contests. Misericordia 7, Delaware Valley 2Corey Dulsky, Tristan Snyder, Murph Lynch and Samarth Shah were all double-winners to pace the Cougars.Allen Morgan-Baber added a win at fifth singles for Misericordia.Wilkes 9, FDU-Florham 0Artyom Nabokin recorded a sweep in the top singles match and the Colonels pushed their win streak to five consecutive matches.After Wilkes went 3-0 in doubles play, Artyom Nabokin scored a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles.WOMEN&#8217;S TENNISEastern 8, King&#8217;s 1Emily Kabalka won at No. 3 singles, but King&#8217;s remained winless in the Freedom Conference while falling to 0-3 in league play.Kabalka captured a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win for the Monarchs&#8217; lone victory.Cornelia Chmil, Linsey Parks and Erika Slowicki all won twice to lead the Misericordia University women&#8217;s tennis team to a 6-3 win at Delaware Valley, Saturday.Taylor Daton and Morgan Gable teamed for a win at third doubles.Wilkes 9, FDU-Florham 0Jordan Vasarkovy won the top singles match and the Colonels continued the best start in program history by pushing their winning streak to 16 straight matches.Vasarkovy won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, while Kendra Croker captured a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. Both teamed up to win 8-2 in the No. 1 doubles match.MEN&#8217;S LACROSSEMisericordia 13, Manhattanville 6The Cougars scored 10 unanswered goals as they rallied for victory.Pat Kellish had five goals for Misericordia and an assist and Matt Beck made three saves in 33 scoreless minutes to earn the win in goal.Chris Fleming and Sean McSwiggan both had two goals and two assists and Brandon Winslow added two goals and an assist.Ryan Romaine was 15-19 on face-offs and Paul Hanrahan had a team-high six ground balls.Delaware Valley 11, Wilkes 6John Wink scored three goals, but the Colonels fell to 0-2 in Freedom Conference play.Wilkes freshman Carter Whittemore made ten saves over the first 45 mintues while freshman Cody Geidel registered five saves over the final 15.WOMEN&#8217;S LACROSSEMisericordia 14, Manhattanville 8Olivia Garcia had four goals and an assist and Liz Mulvey added three goals and two assists as the Cougars extended their winning streak to six straight games.Kaila Quinlivan added three goals and an assist and Lexee Willey scored twice in the victory.Katie McLoughlin made 17 saves and Bri Ladner has six ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls as the Cougars improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAC Freedom.FDU-Florham 14, King&#8217;s 6Anastasia Araviakis paced King&#8217;s with three goals while Gabriella Morrocu scored twice, but two-time defending Freedom Conference champ FDU-Florham opened an 11-2 halftime lead and coasted to victory.Brienna Reasoner led FDU with five goals and one assist.Delaware Valley 20, Wilkes 10Kyra Boccio scored two goals as the Colonels jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but Wilkes couldn&#8217;t hold it in a loss to Delaware Valley.Boccio finished with four goals and Maura Brownsey scored three times for Wilkes.Delaware Valley had a 35-30 shot advantage while posting a 23-9 edge in draw controls.Sarah Carlini finished with ten saves in net for Wilkes while playing all but 6:27 in the cage.MEN&#8217;S VOLLEYBALLWilkes wins twiceJohn Pietryzk made 14 kills as the Colonels opened the day with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-17 over Staten Island, then downed Brooklyn College, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 15-13.Pietryzk made 18 kills and had 11 digs in the five-set win over Brooklyn.Thomas Bogarowski finished with 23 kills during the two victories, and had 16 assists against Brooklyn. Daniel Sales registered 29 assists against Staten Island and 34 more against Brooklyn.MEN&#8217;S TRACKFitch takes first for MisericordiaAlex Fitch won at 5,000 to lead Misericordia at the Coach P Invitational at Moravian College.Sean Luzzi was second in the 1,500 and Trever Reed was third in the 5,000.The Cougars were second in the 400 relay and third in the 1,600 relay.WOMEN&#8217;S TRACKWagner a triple winner for CougarsReilly Wagner won three events to lead Misericordia at the Coach P Invitational, Saturday at Moravian.Wagner won the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and high jump. Bethany Killmon added a win for the Cougars in the 3,000 steeplechase.Oniesha Clarke was second in the 200 dash and in the long jump.Valerie Pagano was third in the steeplechase and Melanie Fry was sixth in the 200 dash.Katie and Kelty Fairchild were fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 400 dash and Meredith Hartz was sixth to lead four Cougars in the top 10 at 5,000 meters. Emma Federinko finished seventh in the event, while Jordyn Donnelly and Ashley Dunteman were ninth and 10th, respectively.Clarke, Katie Fairchild, Kelsey O&#8217;Donnell and Fry were third in the 4x100 while Katie Fairchild, Kelty Fairchild, Fry and Wagner were second in the 4x400.<style>
