Our view: Move beyond awareness to acceptance

<p>Hazleton police made an arrest early Sunday morning after a string of robberies in the Hazleton area between Thursday and Saturday.</p><p>Police arrested Kurt Mumie, 29, formerly of Sugarloaf but currently without a permanent residence, at around 1 a.m. on the 200 block of Pine Street, Hazleton, for his alleged involvement in three armed robberies, with the first occurring on Thursday.</p><p>According to police, that first incident occurred around 4 p.m. Thursday on state Route 93 in West Hazleton, where a male pointed a handgun in the face of a victim and demanded money.</p><p>Later on Thursday, at 4:45 p.m., a male committed an armed robbery at Pence&#8217;s Store on Alter Street in Hazleton, brandishing a handgun and taking approximately $2000, police said.</p><p>Then at 10:48 a.m. Saturday, a male matching the description from a previous robbery walked into the Pantry Quick on West Diamond Avenue in Hazleton, brandished a handgun and demanded all the money in the register. However, in this case, the male was unable to get any money or merchandise, and fled south on North Lincoln Street.</p><p>Mumie was arrested after an investigation by the Hazleton Detective Division. He was charged with two felony counts of robbery, and one misdemeanor count each of terroristic threats and theft.</p><p>He was arraigned this morning by Magisterial District Judge Joseph Halesey and, unable to post $250,000 bail, was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility to await an April 19 arraignment before Magisterial District Judge Joseph Zola.</p><style>
