Umpires may soon wear microphones to explain replays

<p>SCRANTON &#8212; A veteran postal worker from Shavertown admitted Monday to embezzling $4,600 from the Dallas Post Office over a two-year span, the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Tuesday.</p><p>Carol Sosik, 55, pleaded guilty to misappropriation of postal funds at a hearing before U.S. District Judge Robert D. Mariani in Scranton.</p><p>Sosik, who worked at the post office on Memorial Highway as a distribution window clerk and was responsible for selling stamps, began stealing funds in June 2014, prosecutors say.</p><p>She resigned Feb. 17, 2016, ending a career with the U.S. Postal Service that began in 1991, USPS spokesperson Karen Mazurkiewicz said Tuesday. Sosik won&#8217;t be entitled to retirement benefits due to the outcome of the investigation, Mazurkiewicz said.</p><p>Sosik was charged in a one-count criminal information on March 7.</p><p>The felony charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, though a plea agreement indicates parties have agreed that a zero- to six-month sentence is &#8220;reasonable under the facts and circumstances of this case.&#8221; The agreement notes a judge is not bound by the agreement and is free to impose the maximum sentence.</p><p>Sosik, who remains free pending sentencing, will be required to make full restitution, court documents say.</p><p>A sentencing date had not been set.</p><p><ins>For more local crime stories, <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/crime" target="_blank">click here</a>.</ins></p><style>
