Former St. John&#8217;s superstar Chris Mullin has reached an agreement to become St. John&#8217;s new head coach, according to multiple sources. He will be introduced at a news conference Wednesday, a source said.Mullin replaces Steve Lavin, whom the school &#8220;mutually parted ways&#8221; with Friday. Terms of the contract were not available immediately.After Lavin was let go, the school immediately focused its attention on Mullin, a source with knowledge of the process said. Rhode Island coach Danny Hurley reportedly reached agreement Sunday on a contract extension through the 2020-21 season, removing him from consideration.In the 51-year-old Mullin, St. John&#8217;s is hiring someone with no prior coaching experience. However, the Naismith Hall of Famer, who was a three-time Big East player of the year and a five-time NBA All-Star, spent five years as Golden State&#8217;s executive vice-president of basketball operations and most recently has been a front-office adviser for the Sacramento Kings.Mullin&#8217;s hiring is reminiscent of what Iowa State did earlier this decade, hiring former Cyclone and NBA player Fred Hoiberg in 2010 despite his lack of head-coaching experience. Hoiberg, so popular in ISU&#8217;s location of Ames, Iowa, that he is nicknamed &#8220;The Mayor,&#8221; has guided the Cyclones to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons.And St. John&#8217;s might draw from that blueprint, as one source said the school is interested in hiring Matt Abdelmassih, a Hoiberg assistant who is ISU&#8217;s lead recruiter. The 30-year-old Abdelmassih was a manager for St. John&#8217;s men&#8217;s basketball team and a 2007 graduate of SJU, so it would be familiar territory for him. A source said the Red Storm also might reach out to well-known recruiters Barry &#8220;Slice&#8221; Rohrssen and Emanuel &#8220;Book&#8221; Richardson, assistants at Kentucky and Arizona, respectively.The first item on Mullin and his staff&#8217;s agenda might be to re-recruit top 50 prospect Brandon Sampson, a 6-foot-4 guard from Baton Rouge, La., who verbally committed to the Red Storm in January but re-opened his recruitment after Lavin was let go Friday.
