<p>FORTY FORT &#8212; Author, illustrator and part-time puppeteer Kevin Sherry put on his bear head, but Joey Agolino would have none of it.</p><p>&#8220;That looks like a dinosaur,&#8221; the youngster challenged. And considering the squarish snout and blue color, his misgivings seemed understandable.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a bear,&#8221; Sherry insisted before breaking into a few tunes, which got Joey and his fellow pre-kindergarten students rocking and swaying, the debate about the headgear dissipating in the rhythm of Sherry&#8217;s songs.</p><p>Sherry came to Wyoming Seminary Lower School Wednesday as the author for &#8220;Author Day,&#8221; and while he talked a bit about his work with older students, kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes got a handful of bear puns they didn&#8217;t find particularly funny (What do you get when a bear is in the rain? A drizzly bear), a few songs and a dancing raccoon puppet.</p><p>&#8220;I wanted to be a punk musician,&#8221; Sherry told teachers between demonstrations to different classes, &#8220;but I wasn&#8217;t very good at rhyming.&#8221;</p><p>Now he writes and illustrates his own books, including The Yeti Files (he donned a &#8220;Yeti&#8221; headpiece for one of his songs) and does some puppetry, including a self-made marionette raccoon. &#8220;I want to do a puppet apprenticeship this summer, in Vermont,&#8221; he said shortly before the pre-kindergarten students strolled into the library for his punny, tuneful demonstration.</p><p>Sherry also read those students his book &#8220;I&#8217;m the biggest thing in the ocean,&#8221; in which a large squid keeps boasting about being larger than shrimp, clams and other water denizens.</p><p>When the squid made the titular claim of &#8220;biggest thing in the ocean,&#8221; Joey&#8217;s skepticism returned. &#8220;I don&#8217;t <em>think</em> so,&#8221; he warned. Sure enough, when Sherry turned the page, a whale swallowed the squid whole.</p><p>&#8220;I knew it!&#8221; Joey said with a hint of pride.</p><p>Sherry concluded the performance with that dancing raccoon evoking sizable giggles, and Joey once again opined, this time noting that he was grateful it wasn&#8217;t a skunk.</p><p>The odorous animal had come up during Sherry&#8217;s opening punfest: What do you get when you cross a bear and a skunk?</p><p>Winnie the Pee-yew.</p><p><ins>For other local news stories, <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/category/local" target="_blank">click here</a>.</ins></p><style>
