Their view: In the Trump era, we need to trust the media, but can we?

<p>Tom Kehler needs to step away from the Harveys Lake Borough Council. And he needs to do that immediately.</p><p>Kehler, according to a story written by Times Leader and Dallas Post reporter Eileen Godin that appeared in last Friday&#8217;s Times Leader, is facing DUI charges in county court.</p><p>The vice president of Harveys Lake Borough Council was accused of DUI after allegedly crashing into garbage cans with his Cadillac. Police said Kehler left the scene of an accident following an April 2 hit-and-run on Spring Street in the borough.</p><p>After officers tracked him down, Kehler reportedly told them: &#8220;I&#8217;m a Harveys Lake council member. That&#8217;s kinda cool, huh?&#8221;</p><p>Not cool, Tom. Not cool at all.</p><p>If the accusations are true, not only did Kehler break the law on many counts; it seems as though he tried to use his position as a borough council member to get out of the charges.</p><p>After reading Godin&#8217;s story about what the police report from that night indicates, Kehler should feel fortunate that several of the charges lobbied against him have been dismissed.</p><p>Charges of damage to unattended property and failure to notify police of an accident have been dismissed, but the DUI charges are taking Kehler to court.</p><p>According to the criminal complaint, Kehler&#8217;s white Cadillac hit garbage cans and yard decorations, then sped away up Dudley Avenue.</p><p>After witnesses gave police a description of the vehicle and the direction in which it was traveling, officers were able to locate a vehicle with damage to its front left side, matching the impact with the garbage cans.</p><p>Kehler emerged from the back door of a residence on Old Lake Road with, what police said was, &#8220;a long dazed stare&#8221; and the smell of alcohol. He also, according to authorities, had glassy eyes, slurred his speech and had a hard time keeping his balance.</p><p>Kehler reportedly stumbled several times when attempting to retrieve his driver&#8217;s license from the car and, when attempting to sit in the car, missed the seat and nearly fell to the ground.</p><p>The councilman admitted the car was his but claimed he didn&#8217;t know where Dudley Avenue is. Shouldn&#8217;t a &#8220;cool&#8221; councilman know every nook and cranny of the borough he serves?</p><p>Records show a blood test revealed Kehler&#8217;s blood-alcohol content was .186 percent, more than double the driving limit of .08.</p><p>You are anything but &#8220;cool,&#8221; Tom Kehler. And continuing to occupy a seat on Harveys Lake Borough Council is downright wrong. Elected officials are put in place by their peers to make rules. They should also be expected to abide by them.</p><p>It doesn&#8217;t sound like you&#8217;re abiding by the rules here. Step down and let someone with a little more integrity serve. The people of Harveys Lake Borough deserve that much.</p><style>
