<p>On Monday, an American icon would have celebrated his 100th birthday, but he was cut down in the prime of his life by a coward who looked for fame for the wrong reason.</p><p>John Fitzgerald Kennedy would have celebrated his 100th birthday Monday. He was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, while running for re-election on Nov. 22, 1963.</p><p>I will never forget the day.</p><p>I was dismissed early from grade school due to that tragedy. I walked out of school in Forty Fort, just across the street from my home, and you could hear a pin drop.</p><p>No traffic, no noise. Just silence. A cold, strange silence.</p><p>My mother was standing on our porch crying.</p><p>&#8220;Did you hear what happened?&#8221; she asked.</p><p>I just nodded yes.</p><p>For the next three days the country watched in shock.</p><p>Our leader was gone, the person who handled the Cuban Missile Crisis with a cool, calm hand, most likely saving us all from total inhalation. A man about 10 years older than my own father was killed.</p><p>It had a profound impact in my life. Although I became a lifelong conservative politically, I always respected this man.
