Times Leader speller falls to ‘tyrant’ of a word

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; A man who pleaded no contest to starting a fire that heavily damaged Sorrento Restaurant &amp; Pizzeria in Freeland was sentenced Wednesday to seven years probation and ordered to pay nearly $80,000 in restitution.</p><p>David J. Barna Jr., 25, of Freeland, <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/news/652911/freeland-man-pleads-no-contest-to-setting-fire-that-heavily-damaged-business" target="_blank">entered the plea</a> to a felony count of reckless burning on April 19. Multiple counts of arson were dropped in exchange for his plea.</p><p>Luzerne County Judge Michael T. Vough ordered Barna to pay $79,524 in restitution, including $10,988 to the Freeland Fire Department and $63,186 to Sorrento owners Mark Malloy and Salvatore Manifredi.</p><p>The remainder is to be paid out to four other fire departments who responded to the early morning blaze during which three firefighters suffered minor injuries when they fell through the roof of the restaurant.</p><p>According to police, Barna claimed he was under the influence of Xanax, alcohol and marijuana when he set a fire in an alley that spread to the restaurant and an apartment above the business on Dec. 18, 2015.</p><p>A state police fire investigator later concluded the blaze was intentionally set, and surveillance video showed Barna fleeing the scene, according to an affidavit.</p><p><ins>For other local crime stories, <a href="https://www.timesleader.com/crime" target="_blank">click here</a>.</ins></p><style>
