Some 650,000 fans flock to watch Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup parade

<p>WILKES-BARRE TWP. &#8212; Replacement of the ice rink at the Mohegan Sun Arena will start Thursday when crews begin working on the concrete floor.</p><p>The contractor has held off on starting the project full-scale until the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey season ended and the calendar of events at the venue cleared for the summer. Singer Bryan Adams performed at the arena Tuesday night.</p><p>The project is on a tight schedule to be ready for the start of the 2017-2018 hockey season for the Penguins, the anchor tenant of the arena since it opened in 1999.</p><p>Donna Cupinski, a member of the Luzerne County Convention Authority and chairwoman of the capital improvements and strategic planning committee, provided a progress report Wednesday at the authority&#8217;s public meeting.</p><p>In January, the authority hired Total Mechanical Services Inc. of St. Paul, Minn., for the rink work after the contractor submitted a low bid of $869,000.</p><p>&#8220;They&#8217;re looking at saw cutting tomorrow and removing the concrete next week,&#8221; Cupinski said Wednesday.</p><p>In a related matter, the authority approved the purchase of equipment for the project: primary hot water pumps at a cost not to exceed $4,000; and a cooling tower filler and intake louvres at at cost not to exceed $18,000. Authority member David Capin, chairman of the finance committee, explained the urgency of the vote, saying it would take six weeks for the parts to be delivered.</p><p>Another major project on the authority&#8217;s to-do list will be put out for bid Friday.</p><p>Cupinski said the bid package for repairs to the parking lot will contain alternates to keep the project within budget.</p><p>&#8220;We do have bond money to get a good portion of this project done,&#8221; Cupinski said.</p><p>The bids will be advertised through Borton-Lawson engineers and architects and the online service PennBid. The bids will be opened publicly at the arena July 7 so they can be reviewed in time for the authority&#8217;s next regularly scheduled meeting July 12.</p><style>
