<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Ask volunteer Theresa Roebuck how many books the Friends of the Osterhout Free Library have on hand for the 41st annual book sale &#8212; which starts this evening with &#8220;preview night&#8221; &#8212; and she cheerfully estimates &#8220;a million.&#8221;</p><p>It could be an exaggeration, but then again &#8230;</p><p>Earlier this week the group had everything from &#8220;The Complete Works of William Shakespeare&#8221; to a story about Ernie from &#8220;Sesame Street&#8221; to the alleged murder confession of Jimmy Hoffa&#8217;s killer, &#8220;I Heard You Paint Houses,&#8221; on display under a tent next to the library on South Franklin Street.</p><p>&#8220;We have lots of classics that students might need for their summer reading list,&#8221; former librarian/current volunteer Elaine Schall said, pointing toward a table where Jane Austen&#8217;s &#8220;Emma&#8221; shared space with &#8220;Beowulf,&#8221; John Steinbeck&#8217;s &#8220;The Grapes of Wrath&#8221; and Harper Lee&#8217;s &#8220;To Kill A Mockingbird.&#8221;</p><p>Fans of best-selling authors will notice Stephen King&#8217;s horror novels have a table all to themselves, as do Nora Roberts&#8217; romances. Several of the latter author&#8217;s &#8220;Death Series&#8221; books are available, including &#8220;Immortal in Death,&#8221; &#8220;Holiday in Death,&#8221; &#8220;Judgment of Death&#8221; and &#8220;Vengeance of Death.&#8221;</p><p>Are you interested in cooking? This year, the Friends have several boxes of cookbooks donated by the family of the late local chef and caterer Biagio Dente.</p><p>Do you want to learn a language? The Spanish dictionary and the Guide to French Idioms may help, along with &#8220;Basic Russian,&#8221; &#8220;Beginner Slovak&#8221; and &#8220;The Idiot&#8217;s Guide to Yiddish.&#8221;</p><p>Alex Haley&#8217;s &#8220;Roots&#8221; is here. So is Amy Tan&#8217;s &#8220;The Valley of Amazement.&#8221; So are a guide to the Japanese art of feng shui and, at least, thousands of other titles.</p><p>&#8220;You could just get lost here,&#8221; book sale co-chair Irene Martin said, meaning &#8220;lost&#8221; in a good way.</p><p>Would you like to introduce a youngster to award-winning children&#8217;s literature? A table has been devoted to books that won the Newbery or Caldecott medals.</p><p>There are lots of newer titles in the children&#8217;s book section, plus some old friends adults are likely to remember, among them &#8220;Charlotte&#8217;s Web,&#8221; &#8220;Babar the Elephant&#8221; and &#8220;Madeline.&#8221;</p><p>Speaking of children, new this year is a book sale date devoted to them.</p><p>On June 21 kindergarten teacher Mark Krokos from the Crestwood School District &#8212; he&#8217;s the son of book sale co-chair Diane Krokos &#8212; will entertain with a bubble show; children&#8217;s librarian Elaine Rash will offer a make-and-take craft; and the food truck that day will have Ben &amp; Jerry&#8217;s ice cream for sale.</p><p>Yes, also new this year are food trucks, Martin said, explaining Geraldo&#8217;s Pizza will be available on Saturday, PananaMan with his banana-and-peanut-butter concoctions on Monday and the Happy Little Hot Dog cart on Thursday.</p><p>The week-long event will have extended hours this year, and has added the attraction of &#8220;celebrity baggers,&#8221; among them radio personality Frankie Warren from Magic 93 and local authors Catherine Gourley and Nina Cinti.</p><p>Over the past 40 years the Friends of the Osterhout Free Library have raised more than $451,000 through previous sales.
