LEHMAN TWP. &#8212; Owen Morgan and Charlie Kuschke took advantage of one last chance to play on their home field in Thursday&#8217;s Wyoming Valley Conference Senior All-Star Lacrosse Games.The two Lake-Lehman players were the top scorers when the West defeated the East, 10-8, in the boys game to complete the doubleheader.Morgan, an attack who plans to play at Lebanon Valley College, scored a game-high four goals. Kuschke, a midfielder, was the only other West player to score more than once, contributing two goals and an assist.&#8220;For the last game of my high school career before playing in college, I just wanted to play with the guys who helped me get there,&#8221; Morgan said. &#8220;Especially, the guys from the teams I had the hardest time against.&#8220;They definitely improved my game.&#8221;The Lake-Lehman scorers combined with Dallas goalie Corey McAndrew, who made 15 saves, to help the team win despite being outshot, 34-19.&#8220;George (Vavlas from Wyoming Seminary) and Hunter (Grow from Tunkhannock) moved very well on the attack and got the ball to me,&#8221; Morgan said. &#8220;And, Charlie Kuschke, who I&#8217;ve played with, made some passes to help get me open.&#8221;Morgan and Kuschke led the game-changing, first-half surge that led the West to victory.The East led 2-0 just past the midway point in the first quarter before Morgan scored half the goals in a streak that put the West ahead 6-2 before the midway point in the second quarter. Kuschke assisted the Morgan goal that put the West in front to stay with 17 seconds left in the first quarter, then scored the last goal of the streak with 6:57 left in the half.After the West built its second four-goal lead, the East built a 17-3 shot advantage from late in the first half to early in the fourth quarter.McAndrew made sure the shots did not pay off, giving up just four goals during that onslaught while making 10 of his saves.&#8220;It was great to just get everyone together for one last game,&#8221; said McAndrew, who was selected as Defensive Player of the Year this season by WVC coaches.Kyle Richards from Crestwood, a state Class 3A quarterfinalist, led the East with three goals and an assist.Chris Hampel from Lake-Lehman and Shaun Rohland from Wyoming Area coached the West team, which also included players from Dallas, Tunkhannock, Wyoming Seminary and Coughlin.Jon Knowles from Scranton Prep and Brian Zabroski from Crestwood coached the East, which included their players along with those from Abington Heights, Delaware Valley, North Pocono and Lakeland.Ron Ostrowski from Dallas and P.J. Marenko from Coughlin moved from the West to the East prior to the game to help even out the rosters.The all-star doubleheader was in its second year after making its debut at Scranton Prep last season.WVC Girls East 13, West 10Both the East and West teams played shorthanded as only 20 of 42 players listed on the rosters showed up for the opener of the doubleheader.Both sides played without substitutes and with a net blocking the center of one goal as the East team played without a goalie.Neither of the District 2 champions, Delaware Valley and Wyoming Seminary, were represented on the field. Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s Catie Kersey did coach the East team to a 13-10 win over the West, which was coached by Lake-Lehman&#8217;s Ron Strohl.Some players traded sides to create a competitive game.One of the highlights was four future college teammates getting to play together in front of King&#8217;s College coach Ashley Stevens, who did not have a WVC player on her roster in her recently completed first season.Wyoming Area&#8217;s Caity Butchko, Lake-Lehman&#8217;s Katie Strohl and the Dallas combination of Rachel Maniskas and Emma Lehman all plan to play in college for Stevens, who has also started a local travel program, Grit Lacrosse.Makayla Franko from Tunkhannock scored five goals, including four in the last 11 minutes to help the East pull back in front after letting a six-goal lead get away.&#8220;It was really just the team,&#8221; Franko said. &#8220;Working with some of the girls I played against during the season and Abril (Lance) really helped me there.&#8221;Lance, Franko&#8217;s Tunkhannock teammate, scored in the second half along with assisting two of Franko&#8217;s late goals.Samantha Delamater from Dallas had three second-half goals to lead the West.WVC GIRLS LACROSSE ALL-STAR GAMEEast 13, West 10East `8 `5 `&#8211;` 13West `2 `8 `&#8211;` 10SCORING &#8211; EAST, Makayla Franko (5 goals), Emma Lehman (2 goals, assist), Emily Marquadt (2 goals, assist), Olivia Carkner (2 goals, assist), Abril Lance (goal, 2 assists), Maria Bednar (goal).
