<p>LAUREL RUN &#8212; Ron Mika was driving up East Northampton Street on Saturday when he noticed the Giants Despair Hillclimb Association car show off to his right.</p><p>A lover of the Hillclimb and supporter of the community, Mika decided to stop and enter his vehicle &#8212; nicknamed &#8220;Wicked&#8221; &#8212; in the show.</p><p>Oh, did we mention that vehicle was a hearse?</p><p>Needless to say, his entrance drew quite a bit of attention &#8212; and double-takes.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a 1995 Cadillac hearse I bought about eight months ago,&#8221; said Mika. &#8220;I saw there were a variety of vehicles here, trucks and motorcycles, and I thought &#8216;perfect.&#8217;&#8221;</p><p>Mika, who purchases and restores vehicles, said the show was a great opportunity to enjoy some time outdoors while supporting this year&#8217;s Giants Despair Hillclimb set for July 8-9.</p><p>Across the parking lot, Gary Polakoski, Wilkes-Barre Township, was building camaraderie with like-minded car enthusiasts.</p><p>Polakoski was quick to share the story about how, as a youngster, he would watch the Giants Despair Hillclimb with his father, a race which many attendees said tests not only vehicles, but drivers.</p><p>&#8220;I would watch and think that I really wanted to participate,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And for the last 20 years, I have been.&#8221;</p><p>Polakoski had four vehicles entered in this year&#8217;s car show, two of which will be entered in the Hillclimb.</p><p>He and his son, Michael, also of Wilkes-Barre Township, are planning to race their black-and-red 1990 Ford Mustang and red 1983 Mercury Capri.</p><p>Bob Metroka, Hunlock Creek, entered his white 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air in Saturday&#8217;s car show.</p><p>The car, back on the road since 1997, was originally purchased for parts for a friend&#8217;s vintage vehicle.</p><p>Then, Metroka said, he couldn&#8217;t leave it go.</p><p>&#8220;I thought it was too good to get rid of,&#8221; he recalled. &#8220;I&#8217;m proud of all the work that I&#8217;ve done on it &#8212; motor, transmission, body.&#8221;</p><p>Metroka said he especially enjoys the positive reaction he gets from children who love the striking look of the car.</p><p>He enjoys supporting the Hillclimb and sharing bits of its history.</p><p>&#8220;I remember stories about my dad running a 1910 Stanley Steamer shortly after they started the Hillclimb,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It was a car that ran on steam.&#8221;</p><p>The 1-mile race originated in 1906 on a particularly steep area of roadway in Laurel Run. It is the oldest such race in Pennsylvania.</p><p>Billy Feist, organizer of the second annual car show, said it was nice to gather Hillclimb supporters.</p><p>&#8220;There was 68 vehicles here last year,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to top that this year.&#8221;</p><style>
