Woman’s club recognizes U S Navy veteran

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Tim Samec wasn&#8217;t satisfied with his fourth-place finish last year. So he went out and captured top honors on Father&#8217;s Day in the 14th annual Wilkes-Barre Duathlon on Sunday.</p><p>The 39-year-old from Drums finished the 3.1-mile run, 16-mile bike and another 3.1-mile run in 1 hour, 23 minutes and 35 seconds.</p><p>Kevin Rocktaschel, 39, of Dallas, finished second, 24 seconds behind Samec. Sean Robbins, 47, of Dallas, finished third in 1:25:06.</p><p>&#8220;Sean and I finished almost shoulder to shoulder after the first run,&#8221; said Samec, who wrestled for Hazleton Area High School. &#8220;But the bike is my strong suit. And I managed to build about a one to 1-1/2 minute lead between miles one and two.&#8221;</p><p>Samec was never really sure he was going to win until the final turn over the final run.</p><p>&#8220;I finally felt that I had enough of a lead going over the (Market Street Bridge),&#8221; Samec said. &#8220;Because I knew the rest of the race was downhill.&#8221;</p><p>Rocktaschel started running in 2007 and biking two years later in order to get in shape. He weighed 270 pounds 10 years ago. He now weighs in at 175.</p><p>Robbins has won the Wilkes-Barre Duathlon twice. And he&#8217;s won the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon four times.</p><p>Elodie Burlet, 30, of Bethlehem, competing for the first time in the race, won top female honors, finishing in 1:32:24. Kerry Potter, 44, of Kingston, finished second in 1:37:59. Lorrie Beck, 61, of Williamstown, NJ, finished third in 1:39:29.</p><p>&#8220;It went well. But it was really humid,&#8221; said Burlet. &#8220;I actually finished the first run faster than I wanted. I lost my water bottle going over a bump on the railroad tracks. I didn&#8217;t want to stop to pick it up. So I decided to keep going without water.&#8221;</p><p>Burlet began feeling slightly dehydrated about five miles into the bike. But she forged on.</p><p>&#8220;At the turnaround on the bike, someone yelled to me that I was the first female,&#8221; said Burlet. &#8220;I knew I was in the lead. And because I was without water, I took it easy over the last run.&#8221;</p><p>Burlet is a native of Chambery, France. She played tennis at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She&#8217;s a research scientist in Bethlehem for Vaxform, a company that does pre clinical vaccine development.</p><p>Potter was competing in just her second race following a year-and-a-half layoff due to hip surgery. She&#8217;s been running for 23 years and biking for 10 years.</p><p>Beck served as a race official for the Duathlon for 11 years.
