MOOSIC &#8211; The Wyoming Valley Conference fell behind in the first inning and never caught up in Sunday night&#8217;s fifth annual Field of Dreams Game.There still, however, was one Luzerne County player who had a winning night.Holy Cross second baseman Josh Mies, a Duryea resident, was part of the fast start that carried the Lackawanna League to a 6-2 victory over the WVC at PNC Field.Mies was familiar with some of his opponents Sunday.&#8220;I played with a few of them through Teener Leagues and junior high baseball,&#8221; said Mies, who entered Holy Cross as a freshman. &#8220;I played for Redeemer&#8217;s junior high team so I played with Tony (Molitoris).&#8221;The Lackawanna League scored twice in the bottom of the first and had the lead cut to 2-1 when Pittston Area&#8217;s Kyle O&#8217;Fier doubled in the top of the second to drive in Coughlin&#8217;s Chase Nowak, who had walked and stolen two bases.That&#8217;s when Mies went to work.Mies led off with a single to right field, making him the first of four straight Lackawanna hitters to reach to start the inning and open a 4-1 lead. The WVC never got any closer.&#8220;As soon as we got those first couple runs up there, we were able to play loose and enjoy ourselves as much as we could,&#8221; Mies said.Mies, playing his last competitive baseball game before heading to York College to major in civil engineering, enjoyed the setting for his finale.&#8220;Especially with it being here at PNC, I was just trying to take it all in,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I was really happy to be here for one final game.&#8221;Most of the participants in the senior all-star game went away happy as both head coaches &#8211; Berwick&#8217;s Brian Pinterich and North Pocono&#8217;s Brian Jardine &#8211; spread playing time and at-bats around in the game that used 10-man batting orders, with an extra hitter instead of a designated hitter, and open substitution rules.&#8220;My biggest concern was getting everybody multiple reps in the field and at the plate,&#8221; Pinterich said. &#8220;And, for the pitchers, I wanted to know whether they wanted to work one or two innings.&#8220;Of course, you do want to win the game, too.&#8221;Blue Ridge&#8217;s Jake Decker made that difficult. Decker walked and scored in the first, then singled in the two runs in the second. He also came back from elbow trouble that kept him off the mound this season to work the ninth inning and strike out the game&#8217;s final batter.Decker wrapped up a seven-pitcher combination that combined to strike out 12 while holding the WVC to five hits. The last four pitchers worked an inning each and shut out the WVC on one hit.&#8220;We had (five) innings with guys in scoring position where we couldn&#8217;t score a run,&#8221; Pinterich said. &#8220;That was a tribute to them making plays and making good pitches.&#8221;Wyoming Valley West&#8217;s Rich Sott came off the bench to go 2 for 2, draw a walk, steal a base and score the second WVC run on a fifth-inning single by GAR&#8217;s Ismael Lake. He was the team&#8217;s only player with more than one hit.Colin Pasone from Meyers had an outfield assist to gun down a leadoff runner in the eighth. O&#8217;Fier, who had the team&#8217;s only extra-base hit, turned a double play to end the fourth inning on a play started by Dallas second baseman J.D. Barrett.Pittston Area&#8217;s Tyler Jackson pitched a 1-2-3 eighth after Wyoming Area&#8217;s Josh Kopcza had thrown a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts.Lackawanna League 6, Wyo.
