<p>The largest assembly of men and materiel ever coordinated by the military converged on the coast of Normandy, France, 73 years ago this month.</p><p>On D-Day, June 6, 1944, Allied Forces by the thousands assaulted a 115-mile stretch of French shoreline.</p><p>They had come &#8212; the battle-tempered and the raw recruit &#8212; to wrest from Nazi domination the oppressed peoples of Europe.</p><p>At last, the liberation was underway; and ultimately the day was carried by dogged foot soldiers, paratroopers and Rangers who, by their conduct and uncommon courage, infused life into the abstract theories and strategies that had their origin in the war room at Southwick House, England &#8212; headquarters of the Allied High Command.</p><p>&#8220;Operation Overlord&#8221; was a beginning, a campaign to right a terrible wrong. It was a testament to valor and nobility in the face of an enemy relentless in its contempt for human life.</p><p>Troops had stormed ashore through &#8220;a zone of death&#8221; comprised of a steel-tipped barriers and mines.</p><p>Today, we struggle against another insidious adversary, one that denies life to guiltless &#8212; once every 20 seconds or 1,500,000 times a year.</p><p>H-hour is now in the ongoing war against the innocent unborn. In our efforts to free them from the dark forces of abortion, we maneuver around legal obstacles and immoral impediments. We too advance painstakingly through a zone of death to rescue life itself.</p><p>To that end, we must draw on the justice of our cause. More than one half-century ago the mission was clear. It is now as it was then. Our objective is in the words of then president Franklin Roosevelt, to set free a suffering humanity.</p><p>We borrow from them, from their unfailing resolve and from their holy purpose. And one day it will be said of us not only that we stood to the last, but also that we cheered not in victory, itself, but in the greater triumph &#8212; truth.</p><p><strong>Mary Lynch</strong></p><p>Wilkes-Barre</p><style>
