‘Make It Right’: Unemployment compensation amnesty program announced

<p>Miguel Andujar had an off day last week, in the middle of a four-game series against the Pawtucket Red Sox, and instead of sitting on the bench relaxing while the game was being played, the then-Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders third baseman used it as an opportunity to learn.</p><p>It was something that didn&#8217;t go unnoticed by RailRiders manager Al Pedrique.</p><p>&#8220;He really loves to play the game, loves to work and you can tell, I watched him a couple times, a couple innings, he&#8217;s always watching the game,&#8221; Pedrique said on June 23. &#8220;He was talking to our infield coordinator Carl Mendoza, who&#8217;s in town, about game situation. For a 22-year-old kid he&#8217;s mature, yes.&#8221;</p><p>It didn&#8217;t take very long for Andujar, to get his first call-up to the big leagues. In fact, he wasn&#8217;t even with the RailRiders 10 days before being promoted to the New York Yankees Wednesday afternoon.</p><p>While his time with the RailRiders was short &#8212; playing in just seven games &#8212; there was never a moment when Triple-A looked too big for the young third baseman.</p><p>Andujar owned a .308 batting average with a double, home run, six runs scored and 2 RBI in seven games with the RailRiders. He was even more impressive at Double-A, batting .312 with seven home runs and an Eastern League-leading 52 RBI.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the same game. That&#8217;s what (I) keep telling myself,&#8221; Andujar said, through a translator, about the difference between Triple-A and Double-A when he first arrived. &#8220;(I&#8217;m) sticking with the same approach and able to do what I do.&#8221;</p><p>While Andujar is the designated hitter for the Yankees Wednesday night, it&#8217;s likely that he will take on the hot corner at some point in the future, at the very least to provide Chase Headley a day off.</p><p>Andujar&#8217;s defensive skills have been the one drawback on his game up to this point. His accuracy on throws to first base was an area Pedrique had him working on.</p><p>Baseball America cited in this year&#8217;s edition of their prospect handbook that &#8220;the raw ingredients are there for Andujar to stick at third base, but there are rough edges that need to be polished.&#8221; However, he did impress on the field with the RailRiders, routinely making impressive plays at the hot corner and only made one error in seven games.</p><p>&#8220;(I&#8217;m) very focused. I think I&#8217;m doing well in the field and going through (my) daily routine, defensively,&#8221; Andujar said. &#8220;Just working on doing everything right, defensively. It&#8217;s the same routine, but trying to stay focused and doing every single thing right.&#8221;</p><p>RailRiders hitting coach P.J. Pilittere described Andujar as a hitter with &#8220;a really good set of hands and has a really quick bat.&#8221; Andujar showed plenty of pop in Sunday&#8217;s series finale against the Red Sox, when he hit his first Triple-A home run.</p><p>Baseball America cited that the right-handed batter, who&#8217;s the 12th-ranked prospect in the Yankees&#8217; system, &#8220;has a level, balanced swing that could allow him to hit for average and power if he sharpens his pitch recognition and improves his plate discipline. Despite being a free-swinger, Andujar makes a lot of contact.&#8221;</p><p>Andujar had a familiar face next to him in the lineup Wednesday. Former RailRiders lead-off hitter Tyler Wade played second and batted eighth.</p><p>Like Andujar, it was Wade&#8217;s first Major League start. Wade appeared in Tuesday&#8217;s game, walking and striking out in his two plate appearances. He did score a run.</p><p><strong>Carter yet to report</strong></p><p>After getting designated for assignment on Saturday, first baseman Chris Carter has been outrighted to the RailRiders. He hasn&#8217;t reported yet, and has three days to do so.</p><p>Carter&#8217;s start to the 2017 campaign was a disappointment. After leading the National League in home runs last season, Carter posted a .204 batting average with eight home runs and 23 RBI in 57 games. However, that&#8217;s paired with an alarming 70 strikeouts in 167 at-bats.</p><p>The demotion will give Carter an opportunity to regain his footing at the plate.</p><style>
