Luzerne County seeking applicants for recreation funding

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The debut edition of &#8220;Mondays at the Market&#8221; &#8212; being billed as a Health and Wellness Farmers Market &#8212; is set for July 10.</p><p>The additional market day will combine fresh, locally grown produce available during Wilkes-Barre&#8217;s traditional Thursday Farmers Market with information and education from local health and wellness agencies and vendors.</p><p>Produce will be sold Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 10 through Oct. 2.</p><p>Health and wellness agencies and vendors will provide information and education from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., each Monday through Oct. 2.</p><p>&#8220;Mondays at the Market&#8221; will not be held on Labor Day, Sept. 4.</p><p>Notable activities for the first &#8220;Mondays at the Market&#8221; include farm animals from the Lands at Hillside Farms, plus Geisinger&#8217;s giant inflatable colon, which attendees can walk through while learning about the various stages of colon cancer and pre-cancer conditions. Medical staff from Geisinger will illustrate the benefits of early detection and prevention.</p><p>The following agencies will be part of the &#8220;Mondays at the Market&#8221; kickoff on Monday, July 10: Advocacy Alliance (bullying presentation 11:45 a.m. in the bandshell); Aetna Healthcare Insurance; CEO (cooking demonstration); CONCERN (children service agency); Dr. Michael Fox (wellness presentation 12:15 p.m. at bandshell); Gift of Life Donor Program; King&#8217;s College Athletic Training Center (meditation session); LCTA; Senior Medicare Patrol; Mercy Center Nursing Unit, Michele Cassetori &#8212; Lyme disease; Northeast Highway Safety; Northeast Regional Cancer Institute; Pathway to Recovery (tobacco cessation); Veteran Affairs Medical Center (cooking demonstration); Victims Resource Center (domestic &amp; sexual violence information); WIC (cooking demonstration); Wilkes-Barre City Health Department (blood pressure screenings and immunization coloring books); Wyoming Valley Drug and Alcohol (educational games); YMCA (body composition analysis/body weight exercises).</p><p>More activities and presentations will be announced as the summer progresses on the city&#8217;s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wbcity.</p><p>Local agencies interested in participating in the health fair portion of &#8220;Mondays at the Market&#8221; should contact the Wilkes-Barre City Health Department at 570-208-4268.</p><style>
