MOOSIC &#8212; Almost an hour and a half worth of rain delays aside, Chance Adams made due with the hand he was dealt Friday night in the series opener against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.Retiring the side to start the game, Adams had to sit through a 40-minute rain delay and his team&#8217;s at-bats before he came out to pitch the second inning.While he looked like a slightly different pitcher after the rain delay, the 22-year-old right-hander was able to provide the RailRiders (54-33) with five innings of two-run baseball, which was more than manager Al Pedrique could have asked for. However, even though Adams kept his team in the game, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre wasn&#8217;t able to mount the comeback as Lehigh Valley (54-34) had homered twice against the bullpen to take the opener 4-1.&#8220;I thought he threw the ball well enough to end up with better results,&#8221; Pedrique said. &#8220;The rain delay, I thought it got him off of rhythm a little bit, but he showed me wrong. He went out and threw strikes. The one bad pitch he threw to (Dylan) Cozens &#8212; the slider down and in &#8212; he got too much of the plate, but overall I thought he hung in there and threw some good pitches.&#8221;This is the second time in his last three starts that Adams has endured a rain delay.Rain cut his June 27 outing in Syracuse to just an inning. The game was postponed until the following day after a 50-minute rain delay and Caleb Smith picked up where Adams left off.In Adams&#8217; five-inning outing on Friday, he was able to strike out six batters while walking three and giving up three hits.The Scottsdale, Ariz. native had a second-inning lead-off walk come back to bite him when Hector Gomez drilled a double over the head of a sprinting RailRiders left fielder Devyn Bolasky. Then in the fourth, IronPigs right fielder Dylan Cozens homered to start the inning. But aside from the pair of extra base hits, Adams was able to limit the damage the rest of his outing.&#8220;Just kind of unfortunate. I can&#8217;t control the weather,&#8221; Adams said. &#8220;Just made a mistake, Cozens got it. That ball to left, I was kind of surprised he hit it out, but it happens sometimes.&#8221;Not only did Donovan Solano make his sixth career appearance at first base on Friday, his fifth-inning at-bat was the RailRiders&#8217; lone highlight of the night.Solano drilled an 0-1 delivery from Brandon Leibrandt into the RailRiders&#8217; bullpen. The solo home run broke up Leibrandt&#8217;s perfect game and was Scranton/Wilkes-Barre&#8217;s lone extra-base hit.&#8220;I&#8217;m working on it and trying to put the ball in play,&#8221; Solano said of his first home run of the season. &#8220;Not trying to do too much. In that situation, I just wanted to put my barrel in front of me because he had a nice, sneaky fastball, but I got a good swing on it.&#8221;NotesPedrique confirmed after the game that Mike Ford&#8217;s move to the seven-day disabled list was because the first baseman wasn&#8217;t expected to play this weekend, while recovering from a hamstring injury, and the team needed to clear a roster spot for outfielder Mason Williams, who arrived on Friday.Cito Culver did some early work in an effort to play Friday night, was a late scratch after still feeling the side effects after fouling a ball off of his foot during Thursday&#8217;s win over Buffalo. Pedrique expects him to be available Saturday.Right-hander Ronald Herrera was scratched from Saturday&#8217;s with a sore shoulder and Pedrique hopes he&#8217;ll be ready &#8220;soon.&#8221;&#8220;Nothing serious, probably a little tired, weak,&#8221; the skipper said. &#8220;We&#8217;re just going to give it some time relax, get some rest.&#8221;Right-hander Bryan Mitchell left for High-A Tampa before Friday&#8217;s game.
