Lawsuit: Geisinger negligence led to baby’s brain damage

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; They&#8217;re putting up a parking lot after paving over an oasis, but the watering hole won&#8217;t dry up so to speak.</p><p>King&#8217;s College is in the process of buying the Oasis Inn on North Pennsylvania Avenue so it can be demolished, and also plans to get into the business of selling beer and wine on campus.</p><p>John Loyack, executive vice president of administration for King&#8217;s, said Oasis&#8217; liquor license will be purchased for use at school eatery Leo&#8217;s on Mane located a few blocks away at East North and North Main streets.</p><p>&#8220;We&#8217;re acquiring that property to expand parking. The liquor license came with it,&#8221; Loyack said Thursday.</p><p>King&#8217;s has been considering creating some sort of social setting to offer alcoholic beverages much like what its sister schools in the Holy Cross Community do, Loyack explained. The community includes the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary&#8217;s College in Indiana and the University of Portland in Oregon.</p><p>Loyack described the availability of the Oasis property and the license as &#8220;fortuitous&#8221; because it meets the school&#8217;s needs of parking and a richer social environment. Students and the public can soon stop in Leo&#8217;s on Mane for a bite to eat and have a draft of beer or glass of wine. To add to the atmosphere, live music is planned. &#8220;It&#8217;s really to have a social experience, not to distribute alcohol,&#8221; Loyack said.</p><p>Takeouts won&#8217;t be available, and the school will ensure that no one underage will be served by enforcing &#8220;a card-anyone policy,&#8221; Loyack said.</p><p>Leo&#8217;s on Mane has been open for a little more than seven years on the ground floor of Thomas J. O&#8217;Hara Hall. Once the license is transferred, underage students can still patronize it, Loyack said. He expected it to be in place in the fall.</p><p>The sale of alcoholic beverages doesn&#8217;t violate any moral or ethical standards for the Roman Catholic liberal arts college. &#8220;There is no religious restriction as demonstrated by the other sister Holy Cross schools,&#8221; Loyack said.</p><p>Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board spokesman Shawn Kelly said the license transfer is pending and under review. A placard advertising the transfer is posted at Leo&#8217;s and has to be in place for at least 30 days, Kelly said.</p><p>Because the transfer involves changing owners and locations, it&#8217;s designated a double transfer by the PLCB, Kelly added. The transfer is within the city of Wilkes-Barre and does not require a public hearing. That&#8217;s necessary when a license is transferred from outside the city, Kelly said.</p><style>
