Wilkes-Barre mom who left child in hot car among 66 charged with welfare fraud

<p class="x_MsoNormal">Is there anyone associated with the Wilkes-Barre Area School Board or city administration that realizes the impact &#8212; beyond loss of revenue &#8212; of blighted properties?</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">A Times Leader story reported data on blighted properties that does not apply to Wilkes-Barre.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">But if a similar study were done in the city, the many blighted and vacant properties, the foreclosures and the revenue losses to the school district and city would be alarming.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The school district&#8217;s loss of revenue &#8212; caused by blight and an apparent dysfunctional board &#8212; has caused cuts in educational programs and taxes being raised the maximum amount allowable by law.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">Cutting programs and raising taxes could be the end of public education in the city of Wilkes-Barre.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The article details the impact the blighted properties have on the adjoining properties that may be well maintained. People just walking away from their businesses or homes is a major problem.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The Wilkes-Barre Area School Board is walking away by planning to move Meyers High School out of the city. Removing this nearly 100-year-old neighborhood cornerstone will devastate South Wilkes-Barre and have an impact on many disadvantaged students.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The creation and operation of neighborhood crime watch groups, neighborhood associations and the district-wide Save Our Schools organization are a blessing. Theses organizations need to step forward and take issue with this school board.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal">The magnitude of the loss of the neighborhood schools and impact on our most valuable resource, our students, is not measurable.</p><p class="x_MsoNormal"><strong>Richard A.
