<p>A crew from David R. Balent Construction Co. began removal of the Joe Palooka Monument on Tuesday. The granite memorial is set to be refurbished. The monument has stood since the mid-1970s along Route 309 near its intersection with Pine Run Road in Hanover Township. It commemorates the work of Wilkes-Barre cartoonist Ham Fisher. Fisher created Joe Palooka, a heavyweight boxing champion, who appeared in a comic strip from 1930 to 1984. During its heyday, the comic strip ran in 900 newspapers.</p><p>Members of the Building Industry Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania are volunteering material and labor for the monument project, BIA spokesman Don Casterline said. The organization is looking for someone who might like to landscape the area when the monument is back in place in a few weeks.
