<p>RICE TWP. &#8212; A family walking in a Mountain Top housing development was struck by an oncoming car Friday afternoon, injuring five children and two adults, police said.</p><p>The names of the injured were not available as of press time. The adults and three of the children were flown by helicopters for emergency medical treatment. Two other children were driven by ambulance to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township.</p><p>&#8220;It was a family that was walking down the street,&#8221; said Rice Township Police Sgt. Harry Ehret. &#8220;The youngest one was in a baby stroller.&#8221;</p><p>A resident of the Polonia Estates development said a woman who rushed to the scene on Aleksander Boulevard saved an infant who was not breathing and turning blue.</p><p>&#8220;The one lady helped open up the airway,&#8221; said 17-year-old Patrick Colo.</p><p>Colo, who lives across the street from where the accident occurred, said his mother called and told him someone had been hit by a car.</p><p>&#8220;I came out and saw a bunch of kids laying on the ground. They were crying and I tried to help out the best I could,&#8221; Colo said.</p><p>Fox 56 News identified the woman who saved the infant as Annette Mann, an emergency medicine physician at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.</p><p>A child&#8217;s shoe was still in the roadway and the infant&#8217;s stroller and other debris were in the grass of a nearby lawn. A white, four-door Nissan sedan was farther up the street on a lawn. The car&#8217;s hood was dented and the windshield was shattered with a hole on the passenger side.</p><p>Sgt. Ehret, who is investigating the accident, said the woman driving the car was detained.</p><p>&#8220;She&#8217;s in our custody right now pending the outcome of what we can come up with as far as an investigation,&#8221; Ehret said.</p><p>&#8220;(We&#8217;re) still trying to figure out what happened cause none of it&#8217;s making sense to us out here. We&#8217;re still trying to put together why this happened.&#8221;</p><p>The Luzerne County District Attorney&#8217;s Office said it was also investigating.</p><p>The accident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. as the family &#8212; a mother and father, their four children and a young cousin &#8212; was walking south on the boulevard, Ehret said. The car was traveling in the opposite direction on the two-lane paved road and crossed over, striking the group.</p><p>&#8220;I can honestly tell you everyone here on the ground was critical,&#8221; said Ehret.</p><p>The driver of the Nissan, who police describe as a middle-aged woman, was questioned by Rice Township Police, according to Fox 56.</p><p>Several of the driver&#8217;s friends were outside the police station waiting to hear what happened. They told Fox 56 they hadn&#8217;t spoken to her, but said she was on her way home from work when the crash took place.</p><p>WNEP reported late Friday that two of the children involved were treated and released, and all the others remained hospitalized, with one of the adults in serious condition. The other adult and two children were in critical condition, and the remaining child was in fair condition.</p><p>Residents who live nearby said the Nissan involved was towed about 5 p.m., and Aleksander Boulevard reopened about 5:30 p.m.</p><style>
