WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The Lake-Lehman boys soccer team was thought to be in a bit of a re-tooling season after losing several key pieces to graduation and returning just two seniors on the roster.It&#8217;s early, but so far, the transition has been very smooth for the Black Knights.Last week, they roughed up defending Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 champ Holy Redeemer. On Tuesday afternoon, Lehman handed fellow division favorite Meyers its first loss of the campaign by a 3-2 score at Gibby Field.In improving to 4-0 this season, the youthful Black Knights have outscored their opponents 26-6.&#8220;It&#8217;s always good to win your first four or five games, whatever it might be,&#8221; Black Knights coach Mike Kostrobala said. &#8220;For how young we are, I think it comes as a surprise to a lot of people, even people on this team.&#8220;(In the) preseason, we talked about goals, and some of the older guys didn&#8217;t think they were as high as they should have been. &#8230; Every game we play, we&#8217;re building more confidence and getting stronger everyday.&#8221;On Tuesday, Lehman came from behind to earn the win thanks to a pair of second-half tallies and a plethora of missed chances from Meyers in the final 40 minutes.Trailing 2-1 after a lackluster first half, the Black Knights came out of halftime with more intensity and a shot on goal in the first minute hit off the crossbar. About a minute later, Andrew Battin struck for a goal off an assist from Kyle Sincavage to equal the score at 2-2.It took just five minutes for Lehman to score the go-ahead goal when Sincavage scored for the second time of the match, beating the Meyers keeper in the 47th minute for a 3-2 lead.&#8220;At halftime we made some adjustments talking about playing the ball diagonally through their line, and we had some success with it,&#8221; Kostrobala said.The Mohawks (2-1), who outscored opponents 17-2 entering Tuesday&#8217;s match, weren&#8217;t going away quietly.After Lehman went ahead, Meyers dominated ball control and shots on goal. But the Mohawks couldn&#8217;t find the back of the goal despite totaling 14 shots and seven corner kicks in the second half.Their first big chance came off a corner with a melee in front of the goal, but the shot hit the crossbar &#8212; the first of three from the Mohawks to hit the spot in the final 40 minutes.At about the midway point of the second half, Meyers had a wide open net after a cross, but the ball sailed wide. The team also had an opportunity with the Lehman keeper out of position, but again the shot was high.&#8220;The last 15 minutes, they completely took it to us and they certainly could have had a goal or two or three,&#8221; Kostrobala said. &#8220;What I&#8217;m thinking is, &#8216;Let&#8217;s just kill some time and get us through this match with a 3-2 win.&#8217; &#8221;Meyers opened the scoring in the match in the third minute when Dodly Magliore finished a pass from Tanner Nilon. After Sincavage tied the score at 1-1 a little more than 10 minutes later, Jeffrey Yanez put the Mohawks in front 2-1 in the 23rd minute.The two Division 2 and District 2 Class 2A contenders will meet again on Oct. 5 at Lake-Lehman.Berwick 7, GAR 0Kenneth Marshman scored the first six goals for the Bulldogs with Blake Girton added one to close out the scoring.
