EXETER &#8212; In its last match of the regular season, Holy Redeemer lost to Wyoming Seminary &#8212; the only time the Royals lost all season.Playing together on Wednesday for the first time as a team since that setback, Redeemer needed to get back into the win column to claim the Wyoming Valley Conference Class 2A team title.&#8220;We definitely used it to motivate ourselves,&#8221; junior Derek Answini said. &#8220;We weren&#8217;t very happy with the loss, so we worked really hard through the week to get us here.&#8221;The hard work showed as the Royals got improved showings at Fox Hill Country Club from Answini (78), Jack Gallis (89) and Connor Maloney (89) from their rounds earlier in the week during the Pre-district Tournament to help defeat MMI Prep 339-359.Redeemer also got strong scores from Sergei Scaramastro (85), Martin Cryan (87) and Kenny Wallace (89) as the team won its first league title since 2014.With the win, the Royals advance to the District 2 Team Championships on Oct. 9 at Fox Hill against the 2A winner from the Lackawanna League.&#8220;It&#8217;s definitely nice to be back to winning it for sure,&#8221; said Answini, who was the 2A medalist after recording four birdies. &#8220;We&#8217;ve certainly had a dry spell. Hopefully, we can take our momentum to districts and win the title.&#8221;The Royals have been known to dominate in golf in the past after being PIAA runner-up in 2012 and winning a state title in 2013. But the last few years, they&#8217;ve been in the middle of the pack.That, coach Art Brunn Jr. said, makes this win a little sweeter.&#8220;For these guys it&#8217;s new to them. For me it&#8217;s not, but for them it is and it&#8217;s a big deal for them to win,&#8221; he said.Joining Holy Redeemer from the WVC is Class 3A champ Crestwood, which totaled a score of 302 to best Dallas (307) and Tunkhannock (348) for the title. The opponents the WVC champs will see at districts are not known yet.The Comets were paced by Jeremy Harper, whose 73 was tied for the best round of his high school career, and was also the same score he shot at the course earlier this season to take second at the Tryba Preseason Tournament.His total on Wednesday was three strokes better than his round earlier in the week. The other three scorers for the Comets &#8212; Shane Angle (74), Mike Golden (77) and C.J. Bono (78) &#8212; couldn&#8217;t better their scores from Monday, making Harper&#8217;s card even more important in a five-shot victory.&#8220;I&#8217;m glad we got the win today and that we&#8217;re moving on,&#8221; said Harper, a junior who took second at Pre-districts. &#8220;I just hope we can get a district championship for the first time for our school.&#8221;The Mountaineers, who beat Crestwood in the event last year and split two matches with the team in each of the last two seasons, got stellar rounds from Ethan Zawatski (73), Mason Gattuso (74), Brett Ostroski (74) and Colin Bowanko (86).
