With no class due to strike, Dallas students filling days with fun

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; The Wilkes-Barre Area School District raised $15,000 for hurricane victims as part of the &#8220;We&#8217;ve Got Your Back&#8221; campaign, but there was an investigation into possible missing funds, Superintendent Brian Costello confirmed Thursday. </p><p>The rumors of missing funds proved false, he added.</p><p>&#8220;There was a reported discrepancy of the amount of money raised,&#8221; Costello said. But an internal investigation showed no money was missing and that the problem was apparently a &#8220;miscommunication&#8221; among employees handling the fundraising effort.</p><p>Costello did not say which school was involved, but sources told the Times Leader the problem developed at the Solomon Memorial/Plains Township Education Complex.</p><p>The charity drive was spearheaded by the Luzerne Intermediate Unit.</p><p>The $15,000 will go into a single fund being managed by the LIU, a state agency that provides a variety of services to area schools. On Sept. 15, the LIU announced the two-week, &#8220;We&#8217;ve Got Your Back&#8221; campaign. Each district in the LIU decided how it would raise money, with all the funds going into the LIU nonprofit fund managed by The Luzerne Foundation.</p><p>The money will buy backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies. The LIU is working with a group called Kits for Kidz, which will provide backpacks and deliver them to school districts chosen by the LIU.</p><p>At Wednesday&#8217;s monthly LIU board meeting, Executive Director Tony Grieco said one of the districts expected to receive backpacks is Sheldon Independent School District near Houston, a city that suffered severe flooding from Hurricane Harvey.</p><style>
