WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Winless teams, obviously, have their share of troubles.For GAR recently, it&#8217;s been fumbling. The Grenadiers had 17 in their last two games. The problem popped up on the opening kickoff Thursday night, and Athens used the miscue to unleash 210-pound running back Zack Jayne.Jayne scored four first-quarter touchdowns, rushing for 156 of his 220 yards in the opening 12 minutes, as Athens defeated GAR 41-6 in a non-conference game at Wilkes-Barre Memorial Stadium.GAR (0-6) was without head coach Paul Wiedlich Jr., who was serving a one-game suspension. GAR athletic director Simon Peter said the suspension was a personnel matter and referred questions to Wilkes-Barre Area superintendent Brian Costello. He did say Wiedlich will be back for next week&#8217;s game vs. Wyoming Area.Assistant coach Kyle Paul ran the team and saw Jayne scored on a 20-yard run on the first play after Athens (4-2) recovered that fumble on the opening kickoff.Jayne added a 77-yard TD run on the Wildcats&#8217; third play from scrimmage, a 25-yard scoring run on the next possession and a 12-yard TD run after a botched punt snap resulted in a loss of 22 yards.&#8220;We saw on film he was a tough runner,&#8221; Paul said. &#8220;We knew he was going to bring it all night long. It really came down to us tackling and we didn&#8217;t do it. The whole first half, we didn&#8217;t tackle. We bounced off tackles, we arm-tackled. You just can&#8217;t do that to a good running back.&#8221;Athens went up 34-0 on Jayne&#8217;s fifth touchdown with 52 seconds left until halftime. But a bad snap on the extra-point led to an improvised pass that was short of the goal line, holding off the 35-point mercy rule.GAR played much better in the final two quarters and scored midway through the third. Athens had a bad punt snap result in a 23-yard loss, and on the first play quarterback Ronald Peguero threw a jump ball to basketball standout Will Johnson for a 23-yard gain.Peguero scored three plays later on a 9-yard scramble.The Grenadiers limited Athens to 92 yards and five first downs in the second half.&#8220;Second half, we came out and performed,&#8221; Paul said. &#8220;But again, you have to play two halves of football to win.
