Parents upset junior football team from Wilkes-Barre banned from playoffs after fight

<p>DURYEA &#8212; There&#8217;s a new sheriff in town, or sergeant in this case.</p><p>Patrolman 1st Class Michael Rosemellia was promoted to the rank of sergeant at Tuesday night&#8217;s council meeting and was sworn in by Chief Nick Lohman and borough Mayor Keith Moss.</p><p>Rosemellia has been an officer with the Duryea force for 10 years, including six as a full-time officer.</p><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a huge goal for me to be given the opportunity to oversee the guys that work below me and to direct the best possible place they can go as far as their police careers go, and make sure they&#8217;re staying on the right track and taking care of them,&#8221; Rosemellia said. &#8220;I&#8217;ve done a lot of the training for Duryea, so this is more of a management position that comes into play. I&#8217;ve been second in charge since I became a full-time officer.&#8221;</p><p>Lohman said Rosemellia was the first full-time officer hired after he was appointed chief in 2009.</p><p>He said he felt Rosemellia was qualified for the position of sergeant based on previous duties he&#8217;s held with the department, such as being the officer in charge of the crime watch organization.</p><p>&#8220;He&#8217;s put his time in, he does his job and is more than capable of doing the job,&#8221; said Lohman. &#8220;I&#8217;m very proud to see him progress in this department.&#8221;</p><p>Rosemellia is excited to continue climbing the ranks.</p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m looking to always further my career in Duryea,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I want to provide the best leadership skills I can for the guys that are below me.&#8221;</p><p><strong>100-year-old honored</strong></p><p>Also Tuesday, Moss took the time to honor Antoinette Catherine Orzello Pesotini for being one of the oldest residents in the borough. She will celebrate her 100th birthday Oct. 17.</p><p>Pesotini was not in attendance at the meeting, so Moss presented a mayoral certificate to her son, Brian Pesotini.</p><p>In other business, council members:</p><p>&#8226; Approved the hiring of 10 part-time officers for the month of November.</p><p>&#8226; Donate $100 to the Pittston Area Boys Basketball Booster Club.</p><p>&#8226; Apply for the Green Light Go Grant to upgrade traffic signals at the following intersections: Foote Avenue, McAlpine Street and Phoenix Street.</p><style>
