KINGSTON &#8212; Camryn Cassetori did not mind switching venues and playing well into Thursday evening.The Holy Redeemer sophomore was just happy to have avoided an early morning match.&#8220;It was a very long day,&#8221; Cassetori said after rallying in the second set to finish off Hannah Bonk from Dallas, 7-5, 6-3, in the District 2 Class 2A singles quarterfinals.Cassetori and Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s Nicole Joanlanne completed Friday&#8217;s Class 2A semifinal field by winning the two matches that had to be moved from Kirby Park to the Wyoming Valley Indoor Tennis Club because of darkness.When the final game ended at 7:29 p.m., it was more than seven hours after Cassetori started the competitive portion of her day, nearly 8 &#189; hours after the first match was played and 10 &#189; hours from the original scheduled start.Cold and rain delayed the start of day one of singles play from 9 to 11 a.m. Cassetori was thankful to have received that news Wednesday night before setting her Thursday morning alarm.&#8220;Playing later really played to my advantage,&#8221; said Cassetori, who suffers from chronic Lyme Disease after contracting the disease when she was in sixth grade and not having it diagnosed until more than a year later. &#8220;Waking up early is a big problem for me. I have a hard time waking up early in the morning.&#8220;Getting that extra couple hours of sleep really benefited me.&#8221;None of the players will be called on to step back on the Kirby Park courts until it is time to prepare for their 1 p.m. semifinals Friday.Cassetori and Joanlanne were among five Wyoming Valley Conference players, two of them defending champions, who reached the semifinals with multiple wins Thursday.Defending Class 2A champion Brianna Pizzano from Wyoming Area lost just one game in six sets.Hazleton Area teammates Stephanie Mazurek and Lily Nowak made it to opposite semifinals in the District 2-4 Class 3A subregional.Mazurek won the District 2 title but fell short of being subregional champion when she lost to Williamsport&#8217;s Amanda Southard from District 4 in the 2016 final.Southard has since graduated, leaving Mazurek as the top seed.Higher seeds cruised through the first day of the tournament, going a combined 34-1. The eight seeded Class 2A players won three times each. The top five seeds in Class 3A won twice each.The only upset of a seeded player was the sixth and final seed in Class 3A, Williamsport&#8217;s Katie Meale falling in her first match to North Pocono&#8217;s Sarah Sposito, 6-4, 7-5.Cassetori, the third seed, had lost just four games in four sets before running into Bonk in a match that had some extreme momentum swings.After Cassetori took the first set and opened a 2-0 lead in the second set, Bonk broke her serve in four straight points.With the players at deuce in the next game, Bonk took a medical timeout because of asthma issues.Bonk wound up winning that game and taking another Cassetori service game without losing a point.Joanlanne and Scranton Prep&#8217;s Carly Habeeb had already left for the indoor courts between their second and third sets leaving the Cassetori-Bonk match as the only one still playing at Kirby.The match was stopped with Bonk leading the second set, 3-2, and after a wait for a court to open up when they arrived at Wyoming Valley Indoor.Cassetori settled down in the break and won the match by taking the next four games to advance a round further than she had a year ago.&#8220;I definitely kept my composure a lot better,&#8221; Cassetori said. &#8220;If I hit a ball out, I didn&#8217;t freak out about it.&#8220; &#8230; And, I really tried to get more of my serves in because that hurt me when I was outside.&#8221;Cassetori, who went 10-2 at number-one singles during the regular season when the Royals were the WVC&#8217;s top Class 2A team, has a tough matchup in the semifinals. She faces Gabriella Jakubek, who defeated her, 6-0, 6-2, last week to help Scranton Prep beat Holy Redeemer in the district team championship.&#8220;I&#8217;m really hoping that (Friday) I wake up and feel as good as I did (Thursday),&#8221; Cassetori said.Joanlanne, who overcame a first-set loss to defeat Habeeb, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, meets Pizzano, the only Wyoming Area girl ever to win a district singles tennis title.Mazurek and Nowak have already led Hazleton Area into the District 2-4 Class 3A team final that is scheduled for Monday. Now, they have a chance to make it an all-Cougars subregional final.Mazurek will face Wallenpaupack&#8217;s Phoebe Cykosky.
