HANOVER TWP. &#8212; It was one of those games where you just needed to grind out a victory on an unseasonably humid October night.Luckily for Crestwood, the Comets&#8217; rushing attack &#8212; even on a somewhat muddy turf &#8212; was nearly unstoppable Friday at Hanover Area.The Comets rushed for almost 400 yards and had three backs carry for the century mark as Crestwood scored the first 42 points and rolled to a 42-7 victory over the Hawkeyes.Crestwood improves to 5-3 and remains in good position to capture a berth in the District 2 Class 4A playoffs, and possibly even host a first-round matchup.&#8220;The kids played well, and we executed our offense,&#8221; Crestwood head coach Greg Myers said. &#8220;The kids could have got down on themselves in the middle of the first half when things weren&#8217;t going our way. But this team has been able to bounce back and play hard for four quarters. It&#8217;s something we will need to do the next few weeks.&#8221;Sure, it would have been easy for Crestwood to get flustered. The offense, after throwing two quick touchdowns on the board thanks to Patrick Rother&#8217;s 15-yard run and Brandon Brozena&#8217;s 80-yard catch-and-score, sputtered for most of the first half.Then again, penalties will do that.The Comets were flagged 15 times for a total of 124 yards. One of those penalties, coming on the opposite side of the field, wiped out a 32-yard punt return for a score. Another took a 50-plus yard breakaway touchdown off the board.&#8220;We had a few aggressive penalties, which I can live with,&#8221; Myers said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s something where we have to watch the film closely to see what happened on some of those plays. It&#8217;s something that we have to correct going forward.&#8221;The boys in red didn&#8217;t hang their heads too long, though.Crestwood reached paydirt coming out of the locker room as an eight-play, 54-yard drive was capped off by Nick Grosek&#8217;s second score of the night. The back took the snap in the Wildcat formation and rumbled 28 yards off the right side for the early, 28-0 lead three minutes in.And the Comets put the game into the mercy rule as Kevin Klusewitz took the hand-off on the second play of the next series, broke through the line and went nearly 73 yards untouched. Grosek&#8217;s third TD, a 17-yard scamper, gave Crestwood a 42-0 lead after three.Grosek (118), Rother (117) and Klusewitz (100) each ran for at least 100 yards.&#8220;We showed some glimpses of the single wing, and our kids looked pretty comfortable running it,&#8221; Myers said. &#8220;It brought back memories of how we were able to run the ball the last few years. And hopefully, that&#8217;s something we can continue to get better at in the last two weeks.&#8221;Hanover, which was held to just 56 yards rushing, got on the scoreboard midway through the fourth as David Fedorczyk broke the goal line from 3 yards out with 8:09 left in the game.The Hawkeyes amassed 205 yards on offense &#8211; but 87 of those came on one play as quarterback Aaron Hummer found Sean Coleman on a go-route in the middle of the field.Crestwood quarterback Garrett Swank was efficient behind center, completing 8 of 12 for 148 yards and one score.
