BERWICK &#8212; Wth his multi-dimensional array of talents and uncanny knack for finding the football, Damon Beckhorn is suddenly being promoted as a featured player for the Berwick Bulldogs.In his new starring role, he turned the final minutes of Friday&#8217;s game into his own personal highlight reel.Beckhorn scored two late touchdowns 24 seconds apart, changing a game that suddenly grew tight at Crispin Field into a big sigh of relief for Berwick with a 44-22 victory over Wyoming Valley West.&#8220;They pushed us,&#8221; Beckhorn said. &#8220;And we got back up.&#8221;Then Beckhorn and the Bulldogs simply ran away.With Valley West carrying all the momentum and closing within eight points down the game&#8217;s stretch, Beckhorn buckled up.He turned a short fourth-and-9 toss into a 28-yard touchdown with 2:59 remaining, giving Berwick a two-score lead.&#8220;Every time I get the ball, I&#8217;m thinking touchdown,&#8221; said Beckhorn, a wide receiver on offense.And if that wasn&#8217;t enough to end the suspense, what Beckhorn did next was.On a second-down play during Valley West&#8217;s next possession, a toss to a running back sailed wide.Beckhorn, playing safety on defense, swooped in, scooped it up and charged ahead for a 16-yard touchdown that destroyed Valley West&#8217;s last hopes of a comeback.Game over.&#8220;I was very surprised,&#8221; Beckhorn said. &#8220;I saw green grass. That&#8217;s all I saw. The ball and green grass.&#8221;That ended a night where Beckhorn recovered a fumble to set up Berwick&#8217;s first touchdown, caught three passes for 48 yards, and ran twice out of the Wildcat formation for 40 yards and had another touchdown catch nullified by penalty.&#8220;He&#8217;s a difference-maker. We&#8217;re highlighting him,&#8221; Berwick coach Frank Sheptock said. &#8220;He&#8217;s just a tremendous athlete. You see him do it in so many ways. I don&#8217;t know how many times he&#8217;s made a tackle for a loss on defense. If you&#8217;re playing us right now, Damon Beckhorn on defense is jumping off the film. He&#8217;s the type of young man who can basically take over the game in three phases.&#8220;Great catch on the fourth-down play, and he takes it to the house.&#8221;That play became critical when Valley West charged back.The Bulldogs got 112 rushing yards, an 18-yard touchdown run and a 93-yard kick return touchdown from Evan Klinger to take a 14-8 lead, then moved it to 30-8 with Owen Shoemaker&#8217;s 21-yard touchdown run, a 30-yard field goal from Ken Marshman and a 1-yard touchdown plunge from his cousin, quarterback Jared Marshman.But the Spartans started a second-half rally that quickly closed the gap.Zach Davis ran four yards for one score and later picked up an errant punt snap before returning it two yards for another touchdown that pulled the Spartans within 30-22.Valley West then came up with its fifth sacks and came up with a fumble recovery on it to set up at Berwick&#8217;s 38-yard line.But the Bulldogs defense held, and on the next drive, Beckhorn&#8217;s catch-and-run touchdown sent Berwick on the way to breaking a three-year losing streak against the Spartans.&#8220;Hey man, they&#8217;re a tough team,&#8221; Beckhorn said. &#8220;A highly-skilled, tough team.
