Crestwood refinances again for construction work

Resident objects as Wilkes-Barre council makes appointment

<p>UNION TWP. &#8212; In just a year&#8217;s time, the Northwest Area School District has benefited from the work of the Ranger Foundation, an organization founded and led by Gary Bau with the stated purpose of assisting educational programs at Northwest.</p><p>At Wednesday night&#8217;s school board meeting, Bau presented financial grants of almost $2,000 to three Northwest teachers. The grants included: $125 to Ashlee Papadopalas; $250 to Susan Walters; and $1,539 to Patricia Axtell.</p><p>The teachers said the money will be utilized to purchase classroom materials.</p><p>In addition, the board heard a detailed report from Betsy Ellis, director of district operations, on the implementation of a comprehensive plan which focuses on educational standards and academic achievement.</p><p>With Ryan Miner, high school principal, and Brian Mills, elementary principal, assisting, Ellis said the plan is designed to help Northwest students succeed in higher education and in life.</p><p>Ellis said the plan is available for review at the administrative offices.</p><p>In other business:</p><p>&#8226; The board voted to deny a grievance filed recently by the Northwest Education Association on behalf of &#8220;Employee 4461&#8221; who unofficially has been identified as dismissed elementary teacher Scott Kline. Angela Evans, solicitor, said the education association sought to have Kline reinstated through the grievance. Evans said the case will probably proceed to arbitration.</p><p>&#8226; The board approved a capital fund expenditure of $9,180 to have Turf, Track and Court Inc., of Harrisburg, perform bleacher relocation work at Lewis &amp; Miller Memorial Stadium.</p><p>&#8226; The board accepted a quote of $3,925 from Marsico Excavation to execute drain, sidewalk and landscape work at the intermediate school.</p><p>&#8226; The board awarded a contract for $9,277 to Kissinger Floor and Wall Company, of Berwick, to install waterproof flooring material in Room 121 at the high school.</p><p>&#8226; The board acted to &#8220;lock in&#8221; energy rates with UGI Corp. for a 25-month period commencing on Dec. 1, 2018.</p><p>&#8226; Directors approved the transfer of $108,463 from the capital projects fund to pay the invoices of 16 contractors, the largest of which were $22,427 to Designer Acoustics Inc. and $20,861 to Keystone Communications.</p><style>
