Abington Heights blanks Pittston Area in D2-3A boys soccer quarters

<p>DALLAS TWP. &#8212; Ideally, Chris Scharff would have liked the second half to be much less stressful.</p><p>The Dallas boys soccer head coach&#8217;s message at the break was to score a goal early in the second half, which would have doubled the Mountaineers&#8217; lead. Then again as the clock approached the 30-minute mark, Scharff stressed the importance of scoring that ever-important second goal.</p><p>But that second goal never came and Ricky Wooditch&#8217;s last-minute, first-half goal proved to be the difference as the No. 3 Mountaineers edged No. 6 Tunkhannock 1-0 and advanced to the District 2 Class 3A semifinals Wednesday night.</p><p>Dallas will travel to No. 2 Abington Heights on Monday.</p><p>&#8220;Sometimes the ball doesn&#8217;t go in and I&#8217;m a nervous wreck, but we played OK,&#8221; Scharff said. &#8220;Defensively, as a team, we held them to no goals which is good, but we have to score a few more. I probably thought we should have had a third or fourth one. Maybe two or three early and be able to relax, but it is what it is. The first game&#8217;s always stressful. Thank goodness we got through Tunkhannock. Mark Stroney does a great job. &#8230; You knew it was going to be tough.&#8221;</p><p>While the Mountaineers controlled the ball for much of the first half, they received a boost midway through the period.</p><p>When Nate Maransky, Zach Holthaus and Beaudyn Lewis entered the game for the first time with 19 minutes remaining in the first half, Dallas felt an immediate jolt of energy.</p><p>It took just two minutes for the trio to get involved in a scoring opportunity. And as the first half progressed the scoring chances only improved.</p><p>&#8220;They were all hurt, but we made a thing,&#8221; Scharff said. &#8220;At 20 minutes in, if it was still 0-0 &#8212; we were trying to save them for the next game &#8212; but 20 minutes in we said we had to go for it. We&#8217;re trying to save them for the next game, but we have to win this one, right?&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;We were just really excited to play and get back on the field,&#8221; Maransky added. &#8220;We worked well together, actually. In the midfield, we all went in and we just wanted to attack the goal and get the game and we did.&#8221;</p><p>Even though Maransky, Holthaus and Lewis weren&#8217;t involved on the lone goal, it was their efficient and aggressive play that was key in opening up the Mountaineers&#8217; offense.</p><p>Just as the half was running out, Zack Kalna intercepted a long Tunkhannock pass and sent the ball across the field to Alex Solano. Approaching the Tigers&#8217; net, Solano crossed the ball to Wooditch. The prolific Dallas scorer beat the Tunkhannock goalie to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead with 43 seconds remaining in the half.</p><p>&#8220;Really important, actually,&#8221; Maransky said, of the importance of the first goal. &#8220;We needed that second goal too, but we held them out. The first goal is the most important goal to get.&#8221;</p><p>Even though Maransky wasn&#8217;t able to bury any of his shots, he was just glad to be back out on the field.</p><p>Maransky is well aware of the fact he could be relied on throughout the playoffs and his ability to come back from an injury and get through Wednesday&#8217;s game could be a positive sign of what&#8217;s to come.</p><p>&#8220;I was really excited today, actually. I&#8217;m glad to get back on the field,&#8221; Maransky said. &#8220;I&#8217;m glad it feels good. I can&#8217;t wait to play on Monday and take on Abington.&#8221;</p><p>Monday&#8217;s District 2 Class 3A semifinal at Abington Heights is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.</p><p><strong>DISTRICT 2 CLASS 2A</strong></p><p><strong>Meyers 2, </strong></p><p><strong>Lakeland 1, 2OT</strong></p><p>Meyers&#8217; Johnny Torres scored the winning goal in double overtime to edge Lakeland, which lifted the Mohawks to the District 2 2A semifinals round against Montrose on Monday.</p><p>Torres scored a goal 13 seconds into the match, and then the game-winner at 98:05.
