Officials break ground for LCCC satellite campus in Pittston

<p>LEHMAN TWP. &#8212; Eighth-grader Santino Diana remembered how hard it was to calculate sixth-grade math concepts, so he was happy to share his acquired wisdom with visiting sixth-graders Thursday.</p><p>&#8220;It (math) was hard in sixth grade, but you get smarter as you get older,&#8221; the Lake-Lehman Junior-Senior High School student said.</p><p>Diana was part of a group of 22 Lake-Lehman Algebra 1 eighth-graders who participated in the first hour-long mentoring program with Lehman-Jackson Elementary sixth-graders.</p><p>&#8220;Our sixth-graders have been mentoring younger students, and we thought a mentoring program with the high school could help the sixth-graders who will be coming into the school next year as seventh-graders,&#8221; said Shelene James, the program coordinator and a sixth-grade teacher at Lehman-Jackson Elementary in Lehman Township.</p><p>The program gave nearly 50 sixth-graders an opportunity to see what &#8220;everyday life is like at the high school,&#8221; James said.</p><p>Eighth-graders got to be the &#8220;teacher&#8221; and chose what resources they used to work with small groups of sixth-graders, Patty Harrison, an eighth-grade Algebra 1 teacher said.</p><p>Eighth-graders used two online programs, Braining Camp and Khan Academy, as well as printed sheets to review box-and-whisker plots, interquartile range, and mean absolute deviation with the younger students.</p><p>Diana used Braining Camp and some worksheets with a group of four students that consisted of Lydia Vivian, McKayla Williams, Callie Dieffenbacher and Garrett Sutton.</p><p>&#8220;They are doing really good,&#8221; Diana said. &#8220;They are a good bunch of kids.&#8221;</p><p>Sutton said he liked working with Diana.</p><p>Teacher Harrison said the eighth-graders were a little nervous about teaching and practiced their math concepts before the mentoring session.</p><p>&#8220;This is a review for them (eighth-graders),&#8221; Harrison said. &#8220;They will be using these concepts on a high level later this year.&#8221;</p><p>Whispers from the different student groups could be heard in the high school cafeteria, which impressed Lehman-Jackson Elementary Principal Donald James and Lake-Lehman Junior-Senior High Principal Doug Klopp.</p><p>&#8220;They are really staying on task,&#8221; Principal James said. &#8220;The mentoring program is working so well with math that we could branch out to other subjects such as science.&#8221;</p><style>
