United Way of Wyoming Valley goes anywhere to get out message

It may be a bit anti-climatic &#8212; because they were only around for five years, or because there was never a clear minimum goal to reach, or because they will be obsolete after this year. But the state released the annual School Performance Profiles one last time Friday.And the best Luzerne County school score is: Fairview Elementary in Crestwood School District, with a final SPP of 89. Second is Dallas Senior High School at 87, and third is Chester Street Elementary in Wyoming Valley West at 83.7.At the bottom: K.M. Smith and J.F. Kennedy Elementary schools in Greater Nanticoke Area, with 44.4 and 44.8 respectively, followed by Hazleton Area&#8217;s Hazle Elementary/Middle School at 48.5 and Hazle Township Early Learning Center at 49.2.The state never set a specific goal for schools to reach, though when the first scores were unveiled in 2013 the then acting Secretary of Education said 70 was a reasonable benchmark. By that measure, only 13 of the 60 Luzerne County public schools on the list made the grade.The SPP system replaced the previous Adequate Yearly Progress yardstick used under the federal law known as No Child Left Behind signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2002.That law ambitiously required standardized tests in reading and math in most grades in public schools, and required schools to steadily increase the percentage of students scoring &#8220;proficient&#8221; or &#8220;advanced,&#8221; making adequate yearly progress toward the goal of 100 percent by 2014.As 2014 approached, the administration of President Barack Obama started granting waivers and letting states devise alternatives to the AYP model. Pennsylvania adopted the SPP system, which looks at a broader range of data beyond reading and math tests, but still relies heavily on standardized test results.More recently, Washington dumped NCLB for the newer Every Student Succeeds Act passed in December 2015, which promised greater flexibility to states in measuring school accountability. Under that law, Pennsylvania plans to introduce the &#8220;Future Ready PA Index&#8221; next year.The state promises the new system &#8220;will utilize a dashboard approach to present school-level data, and will feature a broad range of indicators, such as English language acquisition, career readiness indicators, access to advanced coursework, and chronic absenteeism, among others.&#8221;<style>
