Heartbreaker at the Horseshoe: Barrett rallies Buckeyes past Penn State

<p>WILKES-BARRE &#8212; Meyers&#8217; path to the District 2 Class 3A playoffs couldn&#8217;t have been much tougher than Saturday afternoon.</p><p>The Mohawks needed a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Janssen Wilborn in overtime to overcome city rival GAR 26-19 in the Backyard Brawl Game.</p><p>Meyers (6-4) clinched the final seed in the D2-3A playoffs and will travel to top-seeded Scranton Prep (10-0) next weekend. GAR ended its year at 1-9.</p><p>The Mohawks&#8217; victory eliminated Nanticoke (5-5) from the D2-3A playoff hunt, although the Trojans will host the Eastern Conference 3A championship game next weekend.</p><p>Meyers led 19-6 at halftime, using scoring runs of 4 yards by Wilborn and 3 yards by Kevin Dessoye along with a 32-yard fumble return TD by Maleek Robinson to build the advantage.</p><p>Robinson&#8217;s score came with 55 seconds left until halftime, but Meyers couldn&#8217;t seize the momentum over the final two quarters.</p><p>Instead, GAR&#8217;s defense held Meyers to 42 yards of offense after the break. Kadin Taylor&#8217;s 36-yard fumble return touchdown and Noah Taylor&#8217;s PAT tied the score 19-19 at 0:48 of the third quarter. Quarterback Ronald Perguero had a 53-yard scoring run to move the Grenadiers within 19-12 at the six-minute mark of the quarter.</p><p>Neither teams generated much offense in the fourth quarter, sending the game into overtime.</p><p>Meyers had the first possession of overtime, and Wilborn darted through the GAR defense for a touchdown on the first play.</p><p>GAR lost two yards on its first-down play as Meyers&#8217; Reese Patronick broke into the backfield to stop running back Justice Lomas. Running back Tyrone Qualls gained four yards on second down, and Lomas picked up a yard on third down.</p><p>GAR was called for a holding penalty on its third-down play, but Meyers declined it and gave the Grenadiers a fourth-down try from the 7. A pass to Malachai Williams was broken up by Wilborn and Najese Hood in the end zone to end the game.</p><p>Penalties were problematic for GAR throughout.
