Dallas holds off Abington Heights in D2-3A boys soccer semifinal

SCRANTON &#8212; Wyoming Seminary started three underclassmen and five juniors against Scranton Prep, and for many of them, Monday&#8217;s District 2 Class 2A boys soccer semifinal was the biggest game of their careers.So it wasn&#8217;t a surprise when it took the Blue Knights a little time to get going against the top-seeded Cavaliers.The only problem? Scranton Prep knew how to capitalize on the Blue Knights&#8217; slow start.After scoring a combined 17 goals in their first two games of the district tournament, the Blue Knights finally met their match. For the second straight season.No. 4 seed Wyoming Seminary was shut out for the first time this season, falling 3-0, with the top-seeded Cavaliers ending the Blue Knights&#8217; season once again.&#8220;I think the first half we were nervous and it showed,&#8221; Wyoming Seminary head coach Rev. Charles Carrick said. &#8220;We were giving the ball away too easily, but when we could settle down and possess the ball and everything, well, we had better opportunities. They were the better team today.&#8221;&#8220;They all played with a lot of heart and didn&#8217;t let us possess the ball and counter attack and even defend our attack,&#8221; Wyoming Seminary midfielder Edge Miller added. &#8220;I think (the youth) and us losing to them last year gave us the momentum to want it more, but obviously we came out nervous. Everyone comes out nervous in a game like this.&#8221;Facing a team in Scranton Prep that out-scored its opponents 19-0 in its first two games of the postseason and hasn&#8217;t been scored on since Sept. 28, Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s chances were going to be limited. Even with offensive firepower led by Miller and Luke Johns, who was fresh off a five-goal effort in the semifinals, the Blue Knights struggled to develop quality offensive opportunities.The first, and best, opportunity came near the 25-minute mark when Johns stole a Prep pass deep in his offensive end. The freshman had a shot with the Prep goalie out of position, but missed wide left.It&#8217;s a missed opportunity that Scranton Prep coach Sean Curry thought could have been deflating for the Blue Knights.&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen Luke bury that shot many times,&#8221; Curry said. &#8220;I&#8217;m glad he didn&#8217;t finish it, but by him missing that shot, it may have been in their mind that one opportunity that they had.&#8220;Our organization in the midfield is very good. I know Edge. I&#8217;ve seen Edge play since he was little. I&#8217;m well aware of the talent that&#8217;s there. I&#8217;ve coached Luke in the past, so I&#8217;m well aware of the talent that Luke is. Having seen them, we felt like our speed in the back would counter, but at the same time would minimize those (opportunities).&#8221;The Cavaliers did a nice job of navigating the talented Wyoming Seminary defense by a mix of passes and talented footwork.Scranton Prep junior Alec Buttner made the Blue Knights pay three times, including a devastating shot that killed Wyoming Seminary&#8217;s momentum early in the second half, and put the Cavaliers&#8217; up 2-0 with 32:41 remaining in regulation. Two of Buttner&#8217;s goals came on assists.Buttner put Wyoming Seminary away when he capped off his hat trick with 21:36 left.&#8220;They were on. They moved the ball. Hats off to them,&#8221; Carrick said. &#8220;They have skill in all positions. They moved that ball well, they kept it at their feet and it made for a hard day for us.&#8221;While the Blue Knights fell short of the all-familiar district title game, Carrick was proud of is team&#8217;s season.After having to replace some meaningful seniors, Wyoming Seminary was able to go above expectations this season. The Blue Knights reached the district semifinals for the eighth straight season.&#8220;I think we&#8217;ve had a great season,&#8221; Carrick said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think, with the kids that we lost last year, I think we surprised some people. It&#8217;s been a great year, a great group of kids and just a good team effort all around.&#8221;After losing to the Cavaliers in districts for the second straight year, Miller and the rest of the Blue Knights will have plenty of fire to drive them in the offseason and dog days of the Wyoming Valley Conference regular season schedule.&#8220;We really have a young team,&#8221; Miller said. &#8220;We&#8217;re really looking forward to continue to work hard and just come back at it next year.&#8221;Meyers 2, Montrose 0Meyers boys soccer blanked Montrose on Monday to advance to the District 2 Class 2A final match against Scranton Prep.Tanner Nilon scored two goals for the Mohawks, while Johnny Torres assisted on both.
